Product Spotlight: Lava beads with crystals

As I've been posting projects with a beach theme this month in celebration of our August 2017 Design Challenge theme, A Day at the Beach, I was reminded of these cool stones that I picked up when visiting the annual Gem Shows in Tucson, AZ, this past February. (I'm not sure how "lava rock" equates to "beach," except that in Hawaii you find them both?)

Anyway, I picked up these lovelies at the Pueblo Gem and Mineral Show in Tucson. Held annually, the show featured uncut stones, geodes, furniture carved from stone and SO many other treasures, it was by far my favorite show that I attended during my time in Arizona. I picked these up from Starborn Creations, a vendor at the show who also carries beads and cabochons cut from amber, meteorites, fossils, and more.

The lava rock is mined in Indonesia, and it is then shipped to China where it is milled and shaped into both beads and cabochons of dozens of different shapes and sizes. The crystals are added at that point; they are Swarovski and are embedded into the rock so that they are flush with the rock's surface. The crystals came in many colors. The small hint of sparkle from the tiny crystals was a lovely complement to dark surface of the lava.

I love the way these beads feel against my skin; they are smooth and natural, despite their texture. It looks like you'll only be able to purchase these from Starborn at one of the many shows that they attend each year; you'll find the list here. And while Starborn doesn't seem to carry them on their website, I did find a few at Fire Mountain Gems.

And many other vendors carry beads carved from lava without the crystals. Maybe you can decorate your own!
