Have your ears ever become itchy, red, or swollen after wearing a pair of earrings? Do you develop a rash around certain necklace or bracelet clasps? If so, you might be allergic to nickel found in some jewelry findings.

Read on for tips on staying allergy and nickel-free.

1. Avoid base-metal findings, for instance, findings that are colored to look gold or silver. They may be inexpensive, but some base metal contains nickel and will aggravate your sensitivity.

2. Hypoallergenic surgical-grade stainless steel should be comfortable for most people to wear, though it contains a small amount of nickel that may trigger a reaction. Nickel-free stainless steel and nickel-free brass are also available.

3. Niobium and titanium findings are nickel-free and often come in fun colors. You can buy head pins, eye pins, and jump rings as well as earring wires in these metals.

Sterling silver is economical, beautiful, and does not cause a reaction like nickel!

4. Sterling silver is a combination of silver and copper or another alloy. Many people can wear sterling silver without experiencing a reaction.

5. If you choose gold-plated findings, find out what metal is under the plating. Gold-filled findings are unlikely to trigger a nickel allergy, but if your allergy is severe, make sure you choose 14k or higher. Fine gold (24k) is the purest gold for jewelry, so it is ideal for people who are hypersensitive to nickel.
