Net a variety of colorful butterfly or leaf beads for a midsummer earring extravaganza!

Make yours even more distinctive by including earring threads, chain, or fancy links.


  • 2 12 mm butterfly beads (Halstead Bead, Inc., 800.528.0535,
  • 4 11 mm leaf beads, in two colors
  • 2 3 mm spacers
  • 10 in. (25 cm) 24-gauge half-hard wire 
  • 1 in. (2.5 cm) chain, 2–3 mm links
  • 2 2-in. (5 cm) head pins
  • 2 4–5 mm decorative jump rings
  • pair of earring wires
  • chainnose and roundnose pliers
  • diagonal wire cutters

1. On a head pin, string a spacer and a butterfly bead. Make the first half of a wrapped loop

2. Cut a 1⁄2-in. (1.3 cm) piece of chain. Attach the bead unit and complete the wraps. If desired, make a coil with the excess wire.

3. Cut a 2 1⁄2-in. (6.4 cm) piece of wire. On one end, make a coil. String a leaf bead and make a plain loop perpendicular to the coil. Make a second leaf unit in another color.

4. Open the loop of a leaf unit and attach the chain and a jump ring. Close the loop.

5. Open the loop of the remaining leaf unit. Attach the jump ring. Close the loop.

6. Open the loop of an earring wire and attach the dangle. Close the loop. Make a second earring to match the first.
