Versatile squares

Double-drilled square beads lend themselves to multiple earring design options.

  • 2 10–14 mm square beads, double-drilled (Rings & Things,
  • 4 8 mm round beads
  • 4 4 mm round beads
  • 10 in. (25 cm) 24-gauge half-hard wire
  • 3 1/2 in. (8.9 cm) chain, 2–4 mm links
  • 4 1 1/2-in. (3.8 cm) head pins
  • pair of earring wires
  • chainnose and roundnose pliers
  • diagonal wire cutters
Versatile squares_step 1
1. Cut a 3-in. (7.6 cm) piece of wire. Make a wrapped loop in the center of the wire. Do not trim the excess wire.

2. String a double-drilled square bead on both ends of the wire. On each end, make a plain loop perpendicular to the first loop.

3. Cut a 1-in. (2.5 cm) piece of wire. Make a plain loop on one end. String a 4 mm bead and make a plain loop. Repeat. On a head pin, string an 8 mm bead. Make a plain loop. Repeat.

4. Cut a 1-in. (2.5 cm) and  a 3⁄4-in. (1.9 cm) piece of chain. Open the loops of the square-bead unit. Attach a chain to each loop and close the loops.

Open the loops of each 4 mm-bead unit. On one end, attach a chain. On the other end, attach an 8 mm-bead unit. Close the loops.

5. Open the loop of an earring wire. Attach the dangle and close the loop. Make a second earring in the mirror image of the first.
