Jade twists

Embrace natural, earthy tones with this necklace. Look for a jade strand with the widest spectrum of colors!

When choosing the leather for this necklace, consider matching a secondary color in your bead strand. Because most of the jade on this strand is green, I opted for metallic leather cord in russet to pull out the non-dominant gemstone colors.


necklace 16 in. (41 cm)

  • 16-in. (41 cm) strand 25 mm jade twist beads
  • 21 3 mm magatama beads
  • 20 4 mm flat spacers
  • 16–18 in. (41–46 cm) 2 mm round leather cord
  • 34–42 in. (.86–1.1 m) 20–gauge wire
  • 13 in. (33 cm) rolo chain, 6 mm links
  • 2–4 5 mm jump rings
  • 2 pinch ends
  • lobster claw clasp
  • 2 pairs of bentnose pliers
  • roundnose pliers
  • diagonal wire cutters
  • glue, such as E6000 adhesive


  • 2 10–14 mm barrel beads
  • 6 3 mm magatama beads
  • 4 4 mm flat spacers
  • 6 in. (15 cm) 20–gauge wire
  • pair of earring wires
  • chainnose and roundnose pliers
  • diagonal wire cutters

*Twist beads from A Grain of Sand, Check your local bead store for supplies.

1. Cut a 6-in. (15 cm) piece of wire. Make the first half of a wrapped loop. Attach a magatama bead and complete the wraps.

2. String: magatama, spacer, twist bead, spacer, twist, spacer, twist, spacer, magatama. Make the first half of a large wrapped loop. Pull the wire around the jaw of your roundnose pliers again to make a double loop.

3. Complete the wraps. Make four dangles with two twist beads and two with one twist bead.

4. Use bentnose pliers to separate a three-link piece of chain. Separate 25 pieces of three-link chain. Cut a 16–18-in. (41–46 cm) piece of leather cord.

5. Center the longest dangle on the cord. On each end, string the first and third links of three pieces of chain.

6. On each end, string the remaining dangles in descend-ing size, alternating with three pieces of chain.

7. On one end, apply glue to the inside of a pinch end and one end of the cord. Place the cord in the pinch end. Use bentnose pliers to squeeze the prongs of the pinch end closed. Repeat on the other end.

8. On one end, use one or two jump rings to attach a lobster claw clasp. Repeat on the other end, substituting a three-link piece of chain for the clasp.

1. For each earring: Use a 3-in. (7.6 cm) piece of wire to make a loop as in necklace step 1. String: magatama, spacer, barrel bead, spacer, magatama. Make a wrapped loop.

2. Open the loop of an earring wire. Attach the dangle and close the loop.
