May birthstone: Emerald earrings

The timeless color of elegance, emerald can enhance our sense of well-being, balance, and harmony. Whether or not you have a May birthday, you definitely need a pair of emerald green earrings!


  • 12 9 mm crystal drop beads
  • 2 28 mm connectors, with four loops
  • 2 10 x 8 mm (wide) octagon chatons
  • 2 10 mm octagon bezels, with two loops 
  • 4 10 x 5 mm (narrow) rectangular octagon chatons
  • 4 10 mm rectangular octagon bezels, with two loops
  • 12 5 mm bead caps
  • 12 in. (30 cm) 24-gauge wire 
  • 6 2-in. (5 cm) decorative head pins
  • pair of earring wires
  • chainnose and roundnose pliers
  • diagonal wire cutters

Crystals, chatons, and bezels from Beadaholique, Connectors from Plasabali Silver Beads, Glinter earring wires from Elephant Eye Beads, Check your local bead store for supplies.

Step 1
For each earring: On a decorative head pin, string a bead cap and a drop bead. Make the first half of a wrapped loop. Make three bead units.

Step 2
Cut a 2-in. (5 cm) piece of wire. On one end, make the first half of a wrapped loop. String a bead cap and a drop and make the first half of a wrapped loop. Make three bead connectors.

Step 3
Place a 10 x 8 mm (wide) chaton in an octagon bezel setting. Use chainnose pliers to fold down the bezel’s prongs. Make one wide connector and two 10 x 5 mm (narrow) connectors.

Step 4
Attach a bead unit and a loop of a wide connector. Attach the remaining loop and a loop of a bead connector. Complete the wraps as you go. Leave the top loop unwrapped.

Step 5
Repeat step 4 with a narrow connector. Make two narrow dangles.

Step 6
Attach the wide dangle and a loop of a four-loop connector. On each adjacent loop of the connector, attach a narrow dangle. Complete the wraps as you go.

Step 7
Open the loop of an earring wire and attach the remaining loop of the connector. Close the loop.
