Elegant pathways teardrop edge necklace

Fire-polished beads mimic the color and sparkle of cut gemstones in a design stitched on the diagonal and accented with teardrop edging

An experiment in diagonal right-angle weave led to a design stitched in two-needle cross-weaving. The interlacing threads produce a beautiful drape that resists twisting.

FIGURE 1
ROW 1

1. Cut 2 yd. (1.8m) of Power Pro or Fireline, and thread a needle on each end.

2. Pick up an 11/0 seed bead and center it on the thread. With the right-hand needle, pick up a color A 4mm fire-polished bead, a 15/0, a teardrop bead, a 15/0, and a color B 4mm fire-polished bead (FIGURE 1, a–b).

3. With the left needle, pick up an A, an 11/0, and an A (d–e).

4. Pick up an 11/0 and cross both needles through it (b–c and e–f).

5. Following the pattern for the placement of the 4mms for rows 1 and 2 (FIGURE 2), continue stitching for the desired length of the necklace. With each stitch, the right needle picks up a 4mm, a 15/0, a teardrop, a 15/0, and a 4mm. The left needle picks up a 4mm, an 11/0, and a 4mm. Then both needles cross through an 11/0.

6. Secure the thread with a concealed square knot in the last 11/0 picked up (FIGURE 1, point g). Sew through the beadwork, and tie a concealed square knot as indicated in FIGURE 1 by the double-triangle symbol. Trim the thread.

ROW 2

1. Cut 2 yd. (1.8m) of Power Pro or Fireline, and thread a needle on each end.

2. Pick up an 11/0 and center it on the thread. With each needle, pick up four 15/0s. Pick up an 11/0 and cross both needles through it (FIGURE 3, a–b and e–f) to form a loop.

3. Retrace the thread path through the loop, and tie a concealed square knot as indicated by the double-triangle symbol in the loop detail of Figure 3.

4. With the right needle, pick up an 11/0 and an A. Sew through the 11/0 opposite the first teardrop in row 1 (f–g). Pick up an A (g–h).

5. With the left needle, pick up an 11/0, two 15/0s, an A, and two 15/0s (b–c).

6. Pick up an 11/0 and cross both needles through it (c–d and h–i).

7. Continue stitching, following the color pattern. With each stitch, the right needle picks up a 4mm, sews through the next top 11/0 from row 1, and picks up a 4mm. The left needle picks up two 15/0s, a 4mm, and two 15/0s. Then both needles cross through an 11/0.

8. Repeat step 7 for the length of the necklace. Before completing the last cluster, pick up an 11/0 on each needle (FIGURE 4, a–b and e–f). Then both needles cross through an 11/0 (b–c and f–g). Tie a concealed square knot in the last 11/0 picked up.

9. With each needle, pick up four 15/0s (c–d and g–h). Pick up an 11/0 and cross the needles through it. Sew back through the 15/0s. Sew through the beadwork as shown, and tie a concealed square knot as indicated (FIGURE 5). Trim the thread.

10. Open a jump ring. On one end, slide it through the beaded loop and half of the clasp. Close the jump ring. Repeat on the other end.
