The Secret of the Red Woman choker

A necklace inspired by the character of Melisandre in George R.R. Martin’s book series A Song of Ice and Fire, and HBO’s Game of Thrones. If you don’t know the secret of the choker, then you should perhaps beware…

  • 40g 11/0 round seed beads (color A – Miyuki 11-9461, metallic chocolate brown)
  • 15g 11/0 round seed beads (color B – Toho#423, smokey topaz)
  • 10g 15/0 round seed beads (color C – Miyuki 457L, light bronze)
  • 1  27x18.5mm emerald cut fancy stone (Swarovski 4627, crystal red magma - Fire Mountain Gems & Beads, H20-6183CR)
  • 17 6mm bicone crystals (crystal red magma)
  • 2 1-in. (2.5 cm) 5-to-1 strand connectors
  • 1 2-in. (5 cm) head pin
  • Fireline, 6 lb. test, smoke)
  • beading needle, #12

1. CRAW SECTIONS Using color A 11/0 seed beads, create nine elongated hexagons using basic CRAW (cubic right-angle weave). Each short side is six units and each long side is 11 units (FIGURE 1). When turning a corner, the last unit is shared between both sides. Be sure to count these correctly (FIGURE 2). Leave all threads attached for use in the next step.

COUNTING CRAW UNITS  I find it easier to identify each unit by finding its hole rather than counting beads (FIGURE 3). By sticking my needle in each hole, I can keep track easier when checking the length of the row (FIGURE 4).

JOINING ENDS  It is easier to join the ends on a straight length of CRAW than at a corner. FIGURE 1 shows the total number of units needed for each side, but you will find it easier to start stitching in the middle of the first side, then working the rest of the sides, ending by stitching the second half of the first side and joining the ends.

2. EDGING  Using color B 11/0 and color C 15/0 seed beads, add the edging beads to all four corners of the CRAW shape as shown (FIGURE 5). For added support and rigidity, sew through the edge beads of the inside of the shape again.

For the hexagon that will contain the crystal (the center piece), DO NOT edge the inside.

3. JOINING SHAPES  Sew through the beadwork on a hexagon to exit the first inside color A 11/0 under the corner point on the outer edge (FIGURE 6, dark blue bead). Add color B and C seed beads and 6 mm bicone crystals as shown for the upper and lower edges. Retrace the thread path though these beads two to three times to secure. The upper edge will curve in slightly to allow for a smoother fit. Repeat to join all the shapes together, being certain to use the one that will contain the crystal in the center.

Each shape and connection is about 1 1⁄2 in. (3.8 cm) wide. For a 13-in. (33 cm) choker, join four open shapes on each side of the center crystal shape.

4. END BAR To attach a 5-to-1 strand connector to each end of the choker, exit the second or third B from the top of the end edge. Pick up three Bs, the top loop of a connector, and three Bs, and sew through the corresponding B on the bottom surface (FIGURE 7). Retrace the thread path a couple of times, and then repeat this step to attach the remaining loops to the edge Bs that align with the loops.

At one end of the piece, use two jump rings to attach a lobster claw clasp. At the other end, use a jump ring to attach a 3-in. (7.6 cm) extender chain.

For additional elegance, add a 6mm wire-wrapped crystal dangle to the end of the extender chain.
