Flower slides

Use striped seed beads to whip up these versatile components, and then slide them along a ribbon for a bracelet, or dangle them from earrings.

1. On 1 yd. (.9 m) of thread, pick up a repeating pattern of a 6/0 seed bead and a 10/0 seed bead until you have a total of 12 beads. Tie the beads into a ring with a square knot, leaving an 8-in. (20 cm) tail, and sew through all the beads again, exiting the first 6/0 (FIGURE 1, a–b).

2. Work in rounds of netting as follows:

Round 1: Pick up three 8/0 seed beads, and sew through the next 6/0 in the ring (b–c). Repeat this stitch to complete the round, and step up through the first two 8/0s added in this round (c–d).

Round 2: Pick up three 8/0s, and sew through the center 8/0 in the next stitch of round 1. Repeat this stitch to complete the round, and exit the same 8/0 your thread exited at the start of this round (FIGURE 2). Pull the thread snug so the beadwork cups slightly. The concave side should face away from you.

Round 3: Pick up five 8/0s, and sew through the center 8/0 in the next stitch of round 1 (figure 3, a–b). Repeat this stitch to complete the round (b–c). The stitches will sit on top of the round 2 stitches.

Round 4: Sew through the first two 8/0s in the first stitch of round 3. Skip the center 8/0, sew through the following two 8/0s, and continue through the next center 8/0 in round 1 (FIGURE 4, a–b). Pull the thread snug so the skipped bead pops out to form a point. Repeat this stitch to complete the round (b–c), and end the working thread and tail.

3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 to make a total of five flower components.

4. Cut 24 in. (61 cm) of ribbon, and thread it through two opposite loops on the underside of each component. You may find it helpful to pull the ribbon through the loops with the aid of a needle, pin, or chainnose pliers.

Work as in steps 1 and 2 to make two flower components. Open a jump ring, and thread it through the center 8/0 at one point of a component. Add an earring finding to the jump ring, and close the jump ring. Repeat to assemble the other earring.
