Winners of the August Design Challenge

Discover who the winners are this month! And get a sneak peek at next month’s Design Challenge.

The fur flew this month as we chose the winners of August’s Design Challenge, THE DOG DAYS OF SUMMER (AND CATS, TOO!). Submissions of tabbies, pugs, and ponies paraded in to be judged — all crafted into delightful jewelry. It was a charming collection of pampered pets, but we selected FOUR winners.

Thank you so much to all who participated, we can't wait to see what you send us next month! Here are the August 2019 Facet Design Challenge winners!

Our READER’S CHOICE AWARD WINNER for August is Susan Cologne from Richmond, Virginia. Way to go Susan!

She describes her work showcasing a handmade, lampwork glass bead (looks like a basenji to me — “boroo!”) with a woven wire “collar” that wraps and coils around an asymmetrical Cellini spiral variation necklace overstitched with a variety of beads. The necklace decreases down to a few beads that spiral onto SilverSilk-captured chain.

Mamie's Beads Green-Eyes

Our next winner hails from New Orleans, Louisiana. Congrats to Denise Sassone who submitted her adorable embroidery Brooch.

This one of a kind bead embroidery brooch incorporates Japanese and Czech seed beads and bugles, Czech fire-polished beads, pearls, Swarovski flower, and pink-dyed bamboo coral. The endearing whiskers are strips of Fireline whiskers, while her beads are sewn with Silamide. She finishes the brooch with a brass pin back on leather.

Between The Ears

Kudos to Helen Yetman-Bellows from Pepperell, Massachusetts, who’s favorite four-legged friends whinny.

Helen tell us: “Horses were my first love. I was a professional equestrian for over 4 decades and looking between a horse’s ears was the view of the world that I was blessed to have. This is a commissioned piece for a fellow horse lover.”

She used stamping, etching, riveting, chasing, and repousse to create this piece. To see more of her work, visit Helen’s website or Facebook page.

Rub my belly!

The final winner for the August Design Challenge is Natasha Bouey of Pasadena, California. Natasha hand sculpted this precious pug bead using cork clay and PMC+.

She tells us, “I am a huge dog lover. The inspiration struck when a person requested a mini urn to hold the ashes of a beloved pug.  It worked out so well that I started making more pugs as beads!”

Well done, Natasha! See more from her here.

Congratulations to all of our winners! We are so thrilled each month to see the creative designs that our readers share with us.

Come join in the fun! There is still time to enter the next Design Challenge, CELESTIAL WONDER. Submissions will close for this challenge on September 30.
