Chain reigns necklaces

Combine a variety of chains in an extra long necklace
This flapper-style necklace boasts four chains in different sizes, styles, and finishes. Keep the number of beads, charms, and vintage components to a minimum, then stagger them so the chains remain the focus. Long, lean links are all the rage this season, so don’t be surprised if you set off a chain reaction.

  • 10–12 ft. (3–3.7m) chain in four styles and finishes, 28–38 in. (71–97cm) of each
  • 8–12 12–40mm assorted charms with hanging loops, beads, and vintage components
  • 10–15 in. (25–38cm) 22-gauge half-hard wire (2 1⁄2 in./6.4cm per bead)
  • 10–25 4mm jump rings
  • 2 5mm jump rings
  • toggle clasp or S-hook clasp
  • chainnose and roundnose pliers
  • diagonal wire cutters

1a. Determine the finished length of the shortest chain of your necklace and cut a piece to that length. Cut three more pieces of chain, each 2 in. (5cm) longer than the previous one. (My chains are 30, 32, 34, and 36 in./76, 81, 86, and 91cm respectively.)

Arrange the beads and vintage components along the chains, balancing colors, finishes, shapes, and sizes.

1c. To make a bead unit, cut a 21⁄2-in. (6.4cm) piece of wire. Make a plain loop at one end. String a bead on the wire and make a plain loop at the other end.
2a. For the chain with one bead unit, cut the chain into two equal-length pieces. Open a loop on the bead unit and attach the loop to the chain. Close the loop. Repeat on the other side of the bead unit.

2b. For the chain with three bead units, cut the chain into four equal-length pieces. Attach bead units as in step 2a.
3a. For the chain with three vintage components, cut the chain into four pieces. Open two jump rings and attach each end of one component to a chain. Close the jump rings. Repeat with the remaining components and pieces of chain.

For the chain with the charm, cut the chain into two equal-length pieces. Open a jump ring and attach the charm’s loop and each chain. Close the jump ring.
4. If necessary, trim each chain within 1 in. (2.5cm) of the desired length. Open a 5mm jump ring. Attach one end of each chain to the jump ring. Attach the 5mm jump ring to half of the clasp. Close the jump ring. Repeat on the other end.
