1. Tie a double knot (Soutache basics) on one end of 24 in. (61 cm) of thread, and trim the tail by the knot. Thread a needle, and set the thread aside.

2. Cut a 24-in. (61 cm) piece of color A soutache braid. Leaving a 1 1⁄2-in. (3.8 cm) tail, tightly wrap the soutache around the rim of a metal ring (photo a) until the ends meet.

3. Position the soutache tails one on top of the other and, using the threaded needle from step 1, sew up through the center of the braids (sew through the V where the fibers intertwine) directly under the base of the ring (photo b). Sew back through the center of the soutache close to where the thread exited (Soutache basics, Stitch in the ditch). Retrace the thread path to reinforce the join. Lift the working thread out of the way, and trim the soutache tails under the join. Apply a small dot of fabric glue on the ends to prevent them from fraying.

4. Cut a 6 1⁄2-in. (16.5 cm) piece of color B soutache braid and a 6 1⁄2-in (16.5 cm) piece of 3 mm bolo cord. Tape both ends of the bolo cord to prevent it from fraying. Create a stack (Soutache basics) by laying the bolo cord on top of the color B soutache.

5. Attach the stack to the outer edge of the ring: With the working thread from the ring, sew through both layers of the trimmed tail on the ring, and continue through the center of the stack 1 in. (2.5 cm) from one end (photo c). Sew down through the stack and the top outer edge of the color A  soutache about 1⁄4 in. (6 mm) to the left. Sew up through the color A soutache 1⁄16 in. (2 mm) to the left of the previous stitch, and continue through the stack (photo d). Sew down 1⁄4 in. (6 mm) to the left of the last stitch going through both the stack and the top outer edge of the color A soutache. Repeat these stitches around the entire ring.
