To new adventures

Farewell and best wishes from our editor, Julia Gerlach
Julia hero
Guess how many pliers had accumulated in Julia's office over the past few years?

For lots of people, summertime is for lounge chairs and lazy weekends. But I’m a northerner, which means I’m cooped up inside for almost half the year. Once the temperatures turn from frigid to friendly, I’m too excited to sit down for long. Summer is the time to shake up my routine.

It’s with this mindset that I share with you my newest adventure. After 15 years of working at Kalmbach Media (12 of them at Bead&Button magazine), I’ve enrolled in a class that will require my full-time attention. For that reason, I’ve stepped down as Editor of Bead&Button magazine and Facet Jewelry.

Happily, I will continue to be involved as a Contributing Editor, so I will still have a front-row seat in this creative classroom. And all of my colleagues will still be available for bead chats -- just click here to find who they are. You can always reach out to the Facet or Bead&Button staff via email or on social media!

I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work with so many talented bead and jewelry artists. Working with all of you, I’ve been able to share exciting designs, ideas to enhance beading skills, and inspiring stories about the ways beading has enriched and improved lives. Personally, I can attest to the benefits of beading, to the sense of satisfaction derived from creating beautiful things with colorful bits of glass and stone, to the self-confidence gained by developing one’s preferred color palette or design sense. I came to beading at a challenging time in my life and, in many ways, the beads have helped me through by bolstering my ability to solve problems and by embellishing my life with color and sparkle.

It is now time for me to move on to another chapter in my life. I have many fond memories of my time at Bead&Button and hope to create many more in my new role. Best wishes to everyone — see you on the beady side of life!
