Adapting patterns from Bead&Button

The October issue is on sale now!

It's September, which means a change of season is upon us, school is back in session, and — oh yes — the October issue of Bead&Button is on newsstands now! This issue features several gorgeous projects to shift you into an autumnal mindset, including the amazing Isabella Lam's "Ivy trails necklace" (below). Like her many other designs, this one is utterly beautiful but not fussy or too heavy. It's a classic design and the crystals sprinkled throughout add just enough sparkle that you could wear it for a nice evening out. The question that always comes up around here is "Would you wear it to the grocery store or Target?" In other words, is it too fancy for everyday life?

Isabella Lam's "Ivy trails necklace" is a classic.

Well, the answers always vary on that, but personally, I find this design very wearable as it is. But if you feel the crystals are too dramatic to wear to work or while you're running errands, you could easily substitute the crystals with other beads of the same size, or maybe swap the pearls for round gemstones to mellow it out a bit more.

Isabella's necklace, adapted as a bracelet.

Or, if you prefer bracelets, you'll love how easy this design is to adapt. I made this bracelet with the following tweaks to the pattern:

• I substituted Pip beads for the Czech glass leaves because I thought the leaves would be a little too large in a bracelet and would have the potential to fold under the bracelet.

• In step 11, I used 11/0s instead of 8/0s between the SuperDuos. This eliminated the natural curve of the design.

• Finally, I mirrored the edge embellishment on the other side.

It was an easy adaptation and I think it looks great. Thanks, Isabella, for the wonderful design!
