Simple hacks to fix common jewelry length problems

What you need to fix it
  • chain
  • 4 split rings
  • diagonal wire cutters
  • split-ring pliers (optional)

Step 1
Decide how much longer you want your necklace to be. Cut two equal pieces of chain that add up to that length. Attach a split ring to each end of each chain.

Cut off the jump rings on each end of the necklace.

Attach a chain unit to each end of the necklace. Attach the clasp to one of the remaining split rings.

  • 2 lobster claw clasps

Attach a split ring to each lobster claw clasp. Attach the clasp units to a soldered jump ring.

Decide how much shorter you want your necklace to be. Divide that measurement in half and attach a lobster claw clasp on each side of the necklace at that point.

For a big-bead necklace, use a ready-made pearl shortener to adjust the length of the necklace.

Cut a 3-in. (7.6 cm) piece of beading wire. Decide how much length to add to the bracelet. Subtract the length of the clasp, and string enough beads to equal the remaining length. On each end, string a crimp bead and half of the clasp. Go back through the beads just strung. Tighten the wire, crimp the crimp beads, and trim the excess wire.

Attach the clasp segment to the bracelet clasp.

Remove the jump rings from the end of the bracelet.

Open the loops at the desired end point of the bracelet. Link the two segments with one of the jump rings. Close the loops.

On a head pin, string a bead and make the first half of a wrapped loop. Attach the dangle to the end of the bracelet and complete the wraps.

  • 2-6 beads to match the earring beads
  • 4 in. (10 cm) 24-gauge half-hard wire
  • chainnose and roundnose pliers
  • diagonal wire cutters

How to fix it
  • Lengthening earrings offers an opportunity for some extra style.
  • On one end of the wire, make the first half of a wrapped loop. String one to three beads and make the first half of a wrapped loop.
  • Cut the earring chain in half. Attach a chain to each loop of the bead unit. Complete the wraps.

  • Shortening earrings can be as easy as cutting the chain, but a little extra effort can really pay off.
  • Open the loop of the earring wire and remove the chain. Reattach the chain at a center link. Close the loop. On a head pin, string a bead and make the first half of a wrapped loop. Attach the bead unit to the remaining end of the chain. Complete the wraps.
