Puffed squares bracelet

Start with the squares and then find matching crystals, and voilà — a multicolored bauble

As a matter of personal preference, I usually opt for briolettes or round beads, but this strand of square beads lured me with its promise of a simple bracelet.

SUPPLIES

  • 16-in. (41 cm) strand 12 mm square beads
  • 15–19 3 mm bicone crystals, in three or four colors
  • flexible beading wire, .014 or .015
  • 1 1⁄2-in. (3.8 cm) head pin
  • 2 crimp beads
  • lobster claw clasp
  • 1 1⁄4-in. (3.2 cm) chain for extender, 4–6 mm links
  • chainnose and roundnose pliers
  • diagonal wire cutters
  • crimping pliers (optional)

Beads from Eclectica. Check your local bead store for supplies.

STEP 2

1. Cut a piece of beading wire. String a square bead and a bicone crystal. Repeat, alternating bead colors, until the strand is within 1 in. (2.5 cm) of the finished length.

2. On one end, string a bicone, a crimp bead, a bicone, and a lobster claw clasp. Repeat on the other end, substi-tuting a 1 1⁄4-in. (3.2 cm) piece of chain for the clasp. Check the fit, and add or remove beads if necessary. Go back through the beads just strung and tighten the wire. Crimp the crimp beads and trim the excess wire.

3. On a head pin, string a bicone and a square. Make the first half of a wrapped loop. Attach the end link of chain and complete the wraps.

A note about choosing colors: A strand of multicolored beads requires little embellishment. Because I used such small bicone crystals, I chose shades that were saturated enough to be visible: amethyst, indicolite, mocca, and olivine.
