Garnet birthstone necklace

This quick and easy project makes a lovely gift for a January birthday!

A filigree bezel holds a garnet-colored treasure in this delicate necklace. To add dimension, separate bicones with tiny seed beads. Include a chain extender for flexibility.


necklace 17 in. (43 cm)

  • 12 mm flat-back crystal or rivoli
  • 10 x 20 mm filigree
  • 70–80 3 mm bicone crystals
  • 1 g 13/0 seed beads or Charlottes
  • 3 mm spacer
  • flexible beading wire, .010 or .012
  • 1-in. (2.5 cm) head pin
  • 2 crimp beads
  • lobster claw clasp
  • 2 in. (5 cm) chain for extender, 4–6 mm links 
  • chainnose and roundnose pliers
  • diagonal wire cutters
  • crimping pliers (optional)

1. Use chainnose pliers to bend a filigree’s corners around a flat-back crystal or rivoli. Cut a piece of beading wire. Center the pendant on the wire.

2. On each end, string a bicone and a 13/0 seed bead. Repeat for 4 1⁄2–5 in. (11.4–13 cm). String seed beads until the strand is within 1 in. (2.5 cm) of the finished length.

3. On one end, attach a lobster claw clasp. Repeat on the other end, substituting a 2-in. (5 cm) piece of chain for the clasp.

4. On a head pin, string a spacer. Make the first half of a wrapped loop and attach the chain. Complete the wraps.
