Emerald green crystal necklace

Connecting fine chain with crystals gives just the right blend of subtlety and sparkle for everyday wear. 

The beauty of this design is that the color combinations are truly endless — I chose emerald crystals for May’s birthstone, but I’m mighty tempted to adapt this set to suit every month of the year!


necklace 36 in. (91 cm) 

  • 11 8 mm round crystals
  • 20 6 mm round crystals
  • 3 4 mm round crystals
  • 32 in. (81 cm) 22-gauge Artistic Wire
  • 1 1⁄2 yd. (1.4 m) chain, 3–4 mm links
  • 1 1⁄2-in. (3.8 cm) head pin
  • lobster claw clasp
  • 3 in. (7.6 cm) chain for extender, 5–6 mm links 
  • chainnose and roundnose pliers
  • diagonal wire cutters 


  • 2 8 mm round crystals
  • 2 4 mm round crystals
  • 2 1 1⁄2-in. (3.8 cm) head pins
  • pair of earring wires

Check your local bead store for supplies.

1. Cut a 1-in. (2.5 cm) piece of 22-gauge wire. Make a plain loop. String a bead and make a plain loop. Make 10 8 mm connectors, 20 6 mm connectors, and two 4 mm connectors.

2. Open a loop of an 8 mm connector. Attach a 6 mm connector and close the loop. Repeat on the other side. Make 10 connector segments.

3. Cut 10 4-in. (10 cm) and two 7-in. (18 cm) pieces of chain. Use five connector segments to attach four 4-in. (10 cm) chains. Make a second strand. On each end of one strand, attach a 4-in. (10 cm) chain. On each end of the other strand, attach a 7-in. (18 cm) chain.

4. Use a loop of a 4 mm connector to attach one end of each chain. Repeat on the other side. On one end, attach the remaining loop of a connector and a lobster claw clasp.

5. On the other end, attach a 3-in. (7.6 cm) piece of 5–6 mm link chain. On a head pin, string a 4 mm and an 8 mm. Make the first half of a wrapped loop. Attach the dangle and the end link of chain. Complete the wraps.

Use your extra crystals to make matching earrings! For each earring: Make a dangle as in step 5 of the necklace. Attach the loop of an earring wire and complete the wraps.
