January crimson necklace and earrings

Embrace January's traditional birthstone - garnet - but take it one shade of red further. String a crimson necklace with faceted briolettes, crystals, and vermeil accents.
Garnet necklace and earrings hero

January’s traditional birthstone is the garnet. Red garnets are the most common, but in fact, garnets come in a wide variety of colors, including black, green, clear, and numerous shades of red. String a crimson necklace with faceted briolettes, crystals, and vermeil accents. Complete the look with a delicate pair of earrings.

  • 16-in. (41cm) strand 5 x 8mm or larger garnet briolettes
  • 40–50 4mm bicone crystals
  • 4 4mm flat spacers
  • flexible beading wire, .014 or .015
  • 2 crimp beads
  • box clasp
  • chainnose or crimping pliers
  • diagonal wire cutters

  • 2 5 x 8mm or larger garnet    briolettes
  • 6 4mm bicone crystals
  • 6 in. (15cm) 26-gauge half-hard wire
  • 4 1 1/2-in. (3.8cm) head pins
  • pair of 3-in. (7.6cm) earring threads with open jump rings
  • chainnose and roundnose pliers
  • diagonal wire cutters

Necklace 1
1. Determine the finished length of your necklace. (My necklace is 17 in./43cm.) Add 6 in. (15cm) and cut a piece of beading wire to that length. String briolettes until the strand  is half the desired length. Center the briolettes on the wire, and position them in opposite directions, as shown.
Necklace 2
2. String a spacer on each end. String bicone crystals on each end until the strand is within 1 in. (2.5cm) of the desired length.
Necklace 3

3. On each end, string: bicone, spacer,  crimp bead, bicone, half of the clasp. Go back through the beads just strung and tighten the wire.

Check the fit, and add or remove an equal number of beads from each end if necessary. Crimp the crimp beads, and trim the excess wire.

Style of necklace
Earrings 1
1. To make a briolette dangle, cut a 3-in. (7.6cm) piece of wire. String a briolette and make a set of wraps above the bead.
Earrings 2
2. String a bicone crystal and make a wrapped loop perpendicular to the briolette.
Earrings 3
3. To make a bicone dangle, string a bicone on a head pin. Make a wrapped loop. Make a total of two bicone dangles.
Earrings 4
4. Open the loop on an earring thread and attach a bicone dangle, the briolette dangle, and a bicone dangle. Close the loop. Make a second earring to match the first.
