Sapphire rubber-tubing necklace and bracelet

Combine sapphire-colored rubber tubing (yards of it cost next to nothing), a few wood beads and sapphire crystals in a contemporary necklace and bracelet. Use craft wire and silver-colored spacers instead of sterling for a truly budget-friendly set.

SUPPLIES

Necklace 18 in. (46 cm)

  • 7 20 mm round beads
  • 21 6 mm rondelles
  • 24 4 mm spacers
  • flexible beading wire, .014 or. 015
  • 34 in. (86 cm) 20-gauge wire
  • 30–34 in. (76–86 cm) rubber tubing, 2.5 mm width
  • 2 crimp beads
  • 2 Wire Guardians
  • lobster claw clasp and soldered jump ring
  • chainnose and roundnose pliers
  • diagonal wire cutters
  • hammer
  • bench block or anvil
  • crimping pliers (optional)

Bracelet

  • 8–10 20 mm round beads
  • 18–22 6 mm rondelles
  • 20–24 4 mm spacers
  • oval memory wire, bracelet diameter
  • 20–39 in. (51–99 cm) rubber tubing, 2.5 mm width
  • roundnose pliers
  • heavy-duty wire cutters

Round wood beads from Beads and Pieces, beadsandpieces.com. Rubber tubing from jewelrysupply.com. Check your local bead store for supplies. 

INSTRUCTIONS

Necklace: Step 1
Cut a 4 1⁄4-in. (10.8 cm), two 3 1⁄4-in. (8.3 cm), two 2 1⁄4-in. (5.7 cm), and two 1 1⁄4-in. (3.2 cm) pieces of rubber tubing. Cut a 6-in. (15 cm), two 5-in. (13 cm), two 4-in. (10 cm), and two 3-in. (7.6 cm) pieces of 20-gauge wire. On one end of each wire, make a plain loop. On a bench block or anvil, hammer each loop.

On each wire, string: spacer, 20 mm bead, rondelle, spacer, corresponding piece of tubing. Make a plain loop perpendicular to the first loop.

Cut a piece of beading wire. Center a rondelle, the 6-in. (15 cm) dangle, and a rondelle.

On each end, string a spacer, a rondelle, a 5-in. (13 cm) dangle, and a rondelle. Repeat, stringing the 3-in. (7.6 cm), then the 2-in. (5 cm) dangle. End with a spacer.

Cut two 6–8-in. (15–20 cm) pieces of tubing. On one end, string: tubing, spacer, crimp bead, Wire Guardian, lobster claw clasp. Repeat on the other end, substituting a soldered jump ring for the clasp. Check the fit and trim tubing if necessary. Go back through the beads just strung and tighten the wire. Crimp the crimp bead. Trim the excess wire.

Using heavy-duty wire cutters, cut a five- or six-coil piece of memory wire. Make a loop on one end and string a spacer, a rondelle, and a spacer.

Cut a 1 1⁄2–3 1⁄2-in. (3.8–8.9 cm) piece of rubber tubing. String: tubing, spacer, rondelle, 20 mm bead, rondelle, spacer.

Repeat step 2 until you’ve strung the desired number of coils. End with a piece of tubing, a spacer, a rondelle, and a spacer.

Trim the memory wire, leaving a 1⁄2-in. (1.3 cm) tail. Make a loop.
