June birthstone: Coin pearl earrings

A few links snipped from a large, fancy chain round out a design tailor-made to show off a single coin pearl to its best advantage. Make two more dangles for a quick set of matching earrings for a June birthday girl.

SUPPLIES

Earrings

  • 2 12 mm coin pearls
  • 2 2 mm spacers
  • 4 in. (10 cm) 24-gauge half-hard wire
  • 2 in. (5 cm) hammered-ring chain, 12 mm and 15 mm links
  • 2 2-in. (5 cm) head pins
  • pair of earring posts with ear nuts
  • chainnose and roundnose pliers
  • diagonal wire cutters

Necklace 17 in. (43 cm)

  • 12 mm coin pearl
  • 4 2 mm spacers
  • 8 in. (20 cm) 24-gauge half-hard wire
  • 1 1⁄2 in. (3.8 cm) hammered-ring chain, 12 mm and 15 mm links
  • 16–20 in. (41–51 cm) long-and-short-link chain, 1 mm and 5 mm links
  • 2-in. (5 cm) head pin
  • hook clasp
  • chainnose and roundnose pliers
  • diagonal wire cutters

INSTRUCTIONS

Earrings

Step 1
On a head pin, string a coin pearl. Make the first half of a wrapped loop.

Cut two links of hammered-ring chain. Attach the pearl unit to the smaller link. Complete the wraps. Make a second identical component.

Cut a 2-in. (5 cm) piece of wire. Make the first half of a wrapped loop on one end. String a spacer. Make the first half of a wrapped loop. Make two spacer units, one for each earring.

Step 4
Use one spacer unit to attach the first pearl dangle to the loop of an earring post. Complete the wraps. Make a second earring to match the first.

Step 1
Following earring steps 1 through 3, cut an 8–10-in. (20–25 cm) piece of long-and-short link chain. Attach the chain and the pearl dangle with a spacer unit (you'll need four spacer units total). Complete the wraps. Repeat. Check the fit, allowing 1 in. (2.5 cm) for finishing. Trim chain if necessary.

Cut a small link from the hammered-ring chain. Use a spacer unit to attach the link and an end link of a chain.

On the end of the other chain, use a spacer unit to attach a hook clasp.

Tip
For the clasp on the gold necklace, I straightened a hammered ring from the fancy chain, and then used roundnose pliers to turn a hook.
