May birthstone: Emerald bracelet

With its fresh spring color, vintage German milk glass is a fun and affordable stand-in for emerald. String the beads with faceted spacers that accentuate your handmade clasp; all the elements will unite beautifully in this artful piece of wirework.

SUPPLIES

Bracelet

  • 9–11 10 mm glass beads
  • 18–22 6 mm textured flat spacers
  • 12–14 5 mm faceted flat spacers
  • 2 3 mm faceted spacers
  • 10 in. (25 cm) 18-gauge wire
  • 6 in. (15 cm) 22-gauge wire
  • chainnose, roundnose, and flatnose pliers
  • diagonal wire cutters
  • hammer and bench block

INSTRUCTIONS

About 1 1⁄4 in. (3.2 cm) from one end of an 18-gauge wire, use flatnose pliers to bend the wire perpendicular to the coil. Use roundnose pliers to curve the wire into a hook shape. Use the tip of your chainnose pliers to bend the end of the hook in the opposite direction, making a tiny loop. Use roundnose pliers to curve the wire into an “S” shape.

Use roundnose pliers to bend the wire again, curving it in the opposite direction. Use flatnose pliers to make a right angle below the hook.

On a bench block, hammer each side of the hook.

String a 3 mm spacer. String glass beads and 5 mm and 6 mm spacers, repeating until the bracelet is within 1 in. (2.5 cm) of the finished length. End with a 3 mm spacer.

Move the beads against the hook, leaving a 1⁄2-in. (1.3 cm) gap on the end. Make a downward right-angle bend in the wire. Trim the excess wire to 3⁄4 in. (1.9 cm). Make a large plain loop. Hammer the loop.

Gently form the wire by hand into an oval shape. On each side, next to the clasp, wrap 22-gauge wire around the bangle until you’ve filled the gaps, making each coil the same length. Trim the excess wire.
