Chained cubes necklace

String small and large cubes for a shapely necklace

The aquamarine’s AB finish and the labradorite’s diamond finish add extra sparkle to the faceted cubes. This shape has a contemporary vibe, so I paired them with stainless steel chain in a minimalist design for a modern look.

Tip!
To cut stainless steel chain, use only heavy-duty wire cutters. The chain will dull and nick regular diagonal wire cutters.
Chained cubes necklace Step 1
Step 1

Cut 4 mm-link chain to the following lengths:

  • one 3 1⁄2-in. (8.9 cm) piece
  • three 3-in. (7.6 cm) pieces
  • two 2 3⁄4-in. (7.0 cm) pieces

  • two 2-in. (5 cm) pieces

Step 7
Cut two 5-in./13 cm (short) and two 5 1⁄4-in./13.3 cm (long) pieces of chain. For the inner strand: On each end of each wire, string a crimp bead and an end link of short chain. For the outer strand: On each end, string a crimp bead and an end link of long chain. Check the drape and add or remove beads or trim chain if necessary. Go back through the beads just strung and tighten the wires. Crimp the crimp beads. Close a crimp cover around each crimp.

Step 8
On each chain from step 7, string a twisted ring. On one side, open a jump ring and attach the end links and a lobster claw clasp. Close the jump ring. On the other side, use a jump ring to attach the end links and another twisted ring. Use a second jump ring to attach a chain extender.

Step 9
On a head pin, string a small cube. Make the first half of a wrapped loop. Attach the cube to the end link of the chain extender and complete the wraps.
Tip!
Fine-tune: If you change the size of the beads or chain or adjust the length of the necklace, you may need to adjust which links you string through on the second strand to achieve the proper drape. Make sure to check the drape as it would look when worn, not just flat.
