April: "Diamond" birthstone necklace

Pearls, stones, and old world beauty have always been my loves, but seeing them on the women of Downton Abbey has motivated me to start adorning myself with such beauties. You don’t have to be a Crawley sister or a countess to wear these “diamonds.” Simple, elegant pieces like these look divine on “downstairs” women as well.

SUPPLIES

Necklace 20 in. (51 cm)

  • 6 mm pearl
  • 4 mm pearl
  • 10 x 8 mm octagon chaton
  • 10 mm octagon bezel, with two loops
  • 6 mm bead cap
  • 18–22 in. (46–56 cm) chain, 2 mm links
  • 1 1⁄2-in. (3.8 cm) head pin
  • 1 1⁄2-in. (3.8 cm) eye pin
  • 2 4 mm jump rings
  • hook-and-eye clasp
  • chainnose and roundnose pliers
  • diagonal wire cutters

Earrings

  • 2 6 mm pearls
  • 2 4 mm pearls
  • 2 10 mm octagon chatons
  • 2 10 mm octagon bezels, with two loops
  • 2 6 mm bead caps
  • 2 1 1⁄2-in. (3.8 cm) head pins
  • 2 1 1⁄2-in. (3.8 cm) eye pins
  • pair of earring wires
  • chainnose and roundnose pliers
  • diagonal wire cutters

INSTRUCTIONS

Necklace

Step 1
On a head pin, string a 4 mm pearl and make a plain loop.

Step 2
Place a chaton in a bezel setting. Use chainnose pliers to fold down the bezel’s prongs.

Step 3
On an eye pin, string a bead cap and a 6 mm pearl. Make a plain loop.

Step 4
Open the loop of the 4 mm pearl unit. Attach a loop of the bezel and close the loop. Attach the bezel’s remaining loop and a loop of the 6 mm pearl unit.

Step 5
Cut an 18–22-in. (46–56 cm) piece of chain. String the dangle on the chain.

Step 6
Check the fit and trim chain if necessary. On each end of the chain, use a jump ring to attach half of a clasp.
Earrings

Step 1
For each earring: Repeat necklace steps 1 and 2.  On an eye pin, string a bead cap and a 6 mm pearl. Make a plain loop perpendicular to the first loop.

Step 2
Repeat necklace step 4. Open the loop of an earring wire and attach the dangle. Close the loop.
