November birthstone: Topaz set

Highlight the beauty of topaz with three simple jewelry pieces. The delicate necklace boasts a single pendant, while the bracelet is resplendent with nugget-sized crystals. Add easy chain earrings to extend the golden glow.

SUPPLIES

Necklace

  • 16mm crystal
  • 3 2mm round spacers
  • 6 in. (15cm) 24-gauge half-hard wire
  • 15–18 in. (38–46cm) rolo chain, 2–3mm links
  • 2-in. (5cm) 22-gauge
  • head pin
  • lobster claw clasp and soldered jump ring
  • chainnose and roundnose pliers
  • diagonal wire cutters

Bracelet

  • 5–6 16mm crystals
  • 5–7 12mm crystals
  • 13–16 3mm round spacers
  • flexible beading wire, .014 or .015
  • 2 crimp beads
  • lobster claw clasp and soldered jump ring
  • chainnose or crimping 
  • pliers
  • diagonal wire cutters

Earrings

  • 2 12mm crystals
  • 2 2mm round spacers
  • 1 in. (2.5cm) rolo chain, 2–3mm links
  • 2 2-in. (5cm) 22-gauge head pins
  • pair of earring wires
  • chainnose and roundnose pliers
  • diagonal wire cutters

INSTRUCTIONS

Necklace
Tip!
For these projects, use Swarovski crystals in style #5523. The dark color is crystal copper; the light color is crystal golden shadow.

Step 1
Cut a piece of chain 1 in. (2.5cm) shorter than the desired length of your necklace. (My necklaces are 16 in./41cm.) On a head pin, string a crystal and a spacer. Make the first half of a wrapped loop.

Step 2
Attach the dangle to the chain’s center link and complete the wraps. Check the fit, allowing 1 in. (2.5cm) for finishing. Trim chain from each end, if necessary.

Step 3
Cut a 3-in. (7.6cm) piece of wire. Make the first half of a wrapped loop. String a spacer and make the first half of a wrapped loop on the other end. Repeat.

Step 4
Attach the loop of one spacer unit to one end of the chain. Attach a lobster claw clasp to the other loop of the spacer unit. Complete the wraps. Repeat on the other end, substituting a soldered jump ring for the clasp.
Bracelet

Step 1
Cut a piece of beading wire. String a 12mm crystal, a spacer, a 16mm crystal, and a spacer. Repeat until the bracelet is within 1 in. (2.5cm) of the desired length, ending with a crystal.

Step 2
On one end, string a spacer, a crimp bead, a spacer, and a lobster claw clasp. Repeat on the other end, substituting a soldered jump ring for the clasp. Check the fit, and add or remove beads if necessary. Go back through the last few beads strung, tighten the wires, and crimp the crimp beads. Trim the excess wire.

On a head pin, string a crystal and a spacer. Make the first half of a wrapped loop.

Step 2
Cut a 1⁄2-in. (1.3cm) piece of chain. Attach the loop to one end of the chain and complete the wraps.

Step 3
Open the loop of an earring wire (How-Tos) and attach the dangle. Close the loop. Make a second earring to match the first.
