Holiday crystal necklace and bracelet

Holiday crystal necklace

Crystal shapes and sizes can dictate design. In this case, an asymmetrical pattern was the best way to accentuate the wide variety of crystals I wanted to include.

Make your own version by following some simple design guidelines:

  • Work in sets of three crystals for the background pattern; separate sets with a Japanese cylinder bead for added dimension.
  • Keep the shapes the same in a set, but alternate sizes or colors.
  • Create accents by separating the strands and stringing flowers in different sizes and shapes.
  • Use a design board to help you plan.
  • Enjoy the creative journey!

Even the perfect outfit will lack style without the perfect accessories. That’s where the fun comes in for beaders. Although I set out to make jewelry to match a new ensemble, I ended up with a holiday favorite.

INSTRUCTIONS

Small flower

The instructions below illustrate how to string flowers you can incorporate in a necklace or bracelet. Make small flowers with 3mm bicones, 4mm bicones, 4mm rounds, 6mm rounds, or 6mm bicones surrounding an 8mm accent bicone. Large flowers use 8mm rounds.

Large Flower
Large flower: Follow the steps for the small flower, but use 8mm crystals separated by two cylinder beads, as shown.

1. Determine the finished length of your necklace. (Mine is 23 in./58cm.) Add 6 in. (15cm) and cut two pieces of beading wire to that length. Over both wires, string a cylinder bead, a crimp bead, a cylinder bead, and half the clasp. Go back through the beads just strung and tighten the wires. Crimp the crimp bead.

2. Begin the background pattern by stringing a cylinder bead, three crystals, and a cylinder bead over both wires, hiding the wire tails. Use any combination of 3 or 4mm crystals, keeping the design tips in mind.

3. String a small flower.

4. Continue stringing the background pattern, alternating sizes, shapes, and colors of crystals, as desired. Separate each set of three crystals with a cylinder bead. Add flowers in a variety of sizes throughout the necklace. This necklace has nine small flowers and one large flower.

5.
When you are about 1⁄2 in. (1.3cm) from the desired length, check the fit and add or remove crystals, if necessary. Attach the remaining clasp half as in step 1.

2. Over both wires, string a cylinder bead, three crystals, and a cylinder bead. Repeat with different crystals. String a flower. Repeat until the bracelet is 1 in. shorter than the desired length. Vary the sizes and shapes of the crystals and the flowers; end with a crystal pattern.
