Ginkgo necklace

Fire-polished crystals in bold tones highlight a leaf pendant

At first glance, this necklace displays an unusual collection of colors. But the ginkgo leaf, symbolic of the unification of opposites, brings these differences together. It shimmers with shades of brown, purple, and turquoise to match the beads.

Necklace 17 in. (43 cm)

  • 60–70 mm ginkgo leaf pendant
  • 60–72 6 mm fire-polished crystals, in three colors
  • 18–24 5–6 mm flat spacers
  • flexible beading wire, .014 or.015
  • 2 crimp beads
  • toggle clasp
  • chainnose or crimping pliers
  • diagonal wire cutters


  • 6 6 mm round fire-polished crystals, 2 each in three colors
  • 4 5–6 mm flat spacers
  • 2 1 1⁄2-in. (3.8 cm) head pins
  • pair of lever-back earring wires
  • chainnose and roundnose pliers
  • diagonal wire cutters

Step 1
Cut a piece of beading wire. Center a pendant on the wire.

Step 2
On each end, string nine crystals in three colors, then three spacers. Repeat until the strand is within 1 in. (2.5 cm) of the finished length.

Step 3
On each end, string a crimp bead and half of a toggle clasp. Check the fit, and add or remove beads if necessary. Go back through the last few beads strung and tighten the wire. Crimp the crimp bead and trim the excess wire.

Design alternative
For another easy necklace option, string two or three leaves on 2–3 mm link chain. Include a fire-polished crystal with an AB finish to accent the iridescence in the leaves.

Step 1
On a head pin, string a spacer, three crystals in different colors, and a spacer. Make a plain loop.

Step 2
Open the loop of the dangle. Attach the loop of an earring wire and close the loop. Make a second earring.
