Turning over new leaves

Cluster an assortment of flower dangles and beads in an asymmetrical necklace

I’m always dreaming up ways to update old designs. For this one, I imagined three strands bringing the filigree leaves to the center of the neckline to form a cascade. Surprisingly, it actually worked — with only a few adjustments.

SUPPLIES

Necklace 17 in. (43 cm)

  • 5 40 mm filigree leaves
  • 36 mm tube charm
  • 2 10 mm flower beads
  • 15 mm leaf bead, top drilled
  • 20–30 6/0 seed beads, in two colors
  • 6 4 mm spacers
  • 8 mm flower bead cap
  • 20 in. (51 cm) 21-gauge wire
  • 31–33 in. (79–84 cm) chain, 3–5 mm links
  • 5 in. (13 cm) chain, 2 mm links
  • 4 10 mm marquise-shaped links
  • 2 5 mm jump rings
  • 48 4 mm jump rings
  • 2 1⁄2-in. (6.4 cm) head pin
  • toggle clasp
  • chainnose and roundnose pliers
  • diagonal wire cutters
  • hammer and bench block 

Earrings

  • 4 10 mm marquise-shaped links
  • 12 4 mm spacers
  • 12 in. (30 cm) 21-gauge wire
  • 4 5 mm jump rings
  • 8 4 mm jump rings
  • pair of earring wires
  • chainnose and roundnose pliers
  • diagonal wire cutters 

Tube charm from Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores, joann.com. Filigree leaves from Yadanabeads, yadanabeads.etsy.com. Check your local bead store for supplies. 

Color note: For the dangles, I used 6/0 seed beads in teal and Czech glass size E seed beads in metallic copper.

COMPONENTS

Turning over new leaves 1
Flower dangle: Step 1
Cut three 1⁄2–3⁄4-in. (1.3–1.9 cm) pieces of 2 mm link chain. Open a 4 mm jump ring and attach a 6/0 seed bead and an end link. Close the jump ring. Use a jump ring to attach another 6/0. Use jump rings to attach three or four 6/0s to the other chains.

Flower dangle: Step 2
Cut a 2-in. (5 cm) piece of 21-gauge wire. Make a plain loop on one end. Open the loop and attach the end link of each chain from step 1. Close the loop. String a 6/0 and a flower bead and make a plain loop. Make two flower dangles.

Tube unit
On a head pin, string: bead cap, end cap of a tube charm, six to eight 6/0 seed beads, tube, end cap. Make a plain loop.

Wire leaf
Cut a 5-in. (13 cm) piece of wire. Make a plain loop on one end. Using your fingers and roundnose pliers, curve the wire into a leaf shape about 3⁄4 in. (1.9 cm). Pull the end around the stem and down the middle of the leaf. Hammer each side of the leaf.

Coil unit
Cut a 1-in. (2.5 cm) piece of wire. Make a coil on one end. String a spacer and make a plain loop. Make six coil units.

Leaf unit
Cut a 2-in. (5 cm) piece of wire. Center a leaf bead and make a set of wraps above it. Make a plain loop above the wraps.
NECKLACE
Turning over new leaves n1
Step 1
Make the components. Cut a 2-in. (5 cm) piece of 3–5 mm link chain. Use pairs of 4 mm jump rings to attach the tube unit to one end and a flower dangle to the other. Cut a 3-in. (7.6 cm) piece of wire. Make the first half of a wrapped loop and attach: flower dangle, chain link, wire leaf, leaf unit. Complete the wraps. Make a wrapped loop.

Step 2
Use a 5 mm jump ring to attach the wrapped loop and a filigree leaf. Use pairs of 4 mm jump rings to attach five filigree leaves. Use a 5 mm jump ring to attach the coil units to a pair of attached jump rings.

Step 3
Cut three 8 1⁄2-in. (21.6 cm) pieces of 3–5 mm link chain. Use pairs of jump rings to attach an end link to a filigree leaf.

Step 4
Use pairs of jump rings to attach each end link to a marquise link. Use pairs of jump rings to attach another marquise link and the loop half of a toggle clasp.

Step 5
Cut a 3–5-in. (7.6–13 cm) piece of 3–5 mm link chain. Use a pair of jump rings to attach a filigree leaf and an end link. Use pairs of jump rings to attach the other end link, two marquise links, and the bar half of the clasp.
EARRINGS
Turning over new leaves e1
Step 1
For each earring: Make six coil units. Open a 5 mm jump ring and attach three units. Close the jump ring. Make two jump ring units.

Step 2
Use a pair of 4 mm jump rings to attach the jump ring units and a marquise link.

Step 3
Use a pair of 4 mm jump rings to attach another marquise link.
Turning over new leaves e4
Step 4
Open the loop of a lever-back earring wire and attach the dangle. Close the loop.
