Fiesta necklace

Spin a festive 12-strand for your next summer shindig

Be ready to rumba when the next party comes around. Gather a gemstone go-go pendant and a hank of multicolored seed beads, then intersperse pops of navy, turquoise, and red. Your colorful necklace will have you looking salsa-smart in no time.


Necklace 20 in. (51 cm)

  • 45–50 mm gemstone go-go pendant
  • 4–8 9 mm round beads
  • 12–16 7 mm round beads  
  • 32–38 5 mm round beads
  • 10 g 8/0 multicolored seed beads
  • hank 11/0 multicolored seed beads, matte finish  
  • flexible beading wire,.014 or.015  
  • 6 in. (15 cm) 22-gauge half-hard wire 
  • 2 6 mm jump rings
  • 2 cones
  • 24 crimp beads
  • S-hook clasp
  • chainnose and roundnose pliers
  • diagonal wire cutters
  • bead spinner (optional)
  • crimping pliers (optional)
  • 2 9 mm round beads
  • 2 g 8/0 multicolored seed beads
  • 2 g 11/0 multicolored seed beads, matte finish 
  • 4 4 mm spacers
  • flexible beading wire,.014 or.015  
  • 2 crimp beads
  • 2 crimp covers
  • pair of earring wires
  • chainnose or crimping pliers
  • diagonal wire cutters

Check your local bead store for supplies.

1. Cut 12 pieces of beading wire. On one wire, string 11/0 seed beads, interspersing 8/0 seed beads and 9 mm round beads, until the strand is within 3 in. (7.6 cm) of the finished length.  

2. On each of three wires, string 11/0s, interspersing 8/0s and 7 mm rounds, until each strand is within 3 in. (7.6 cm) of the finished length.

3. On each of six wires, string 11/0s, interspersing 8/0s and 5 mm rounds, until each strand is within 3 in. (7.6 cm) of the finished length.  

4. On each of two wires, string 11/0s, interspersing 8/0s, untileach strand is within 3 in. (7.6 cm) of the finished length. Center a go-go pendant over all 12 strands.

5. Cut a 3 -in. (7.6 cm) piece of 22-gauge wire. On one end, make a wrapped loop. On one side of each beaded strand, string a crimp bead, an 11/0, and the loop. Repeat on the other side. Check the fit, and add or remove beads if necessary. Go back through the beads just strung and tighten the wires. Crimp the crimp beads and trim the excess wire.  

6. On one end, string a cone. Make a plain loop. Open a jump ring and attach the loop and an S-hook clasp. Close the jump ring. Repeat on the other end, omitting the clasp.

1. Cut an 8-in. (20 cm) piece of beading wire. Center a round bead. On each end, string 1 1⁄2 in. (3.8 cm) of 11/0 and 8/0 seed beads.

2. On each end, string a spacer. Over both ends, string a crimp bead and the loop of an earring wire. Go back through the crimp bead and tighten the wire.

3. Crimp the crimp bead and trim the excess wire. Close a crimp cover over the crimp. Make a second earring to match the first.

There are about 4,000 11/0 seed beads on a hank. If you enjoy designing with seed beads, consider using a time-saving bead spinner to string them onto your beading wire.
