August birthstone: Peridot bib necklace

Small doses of amethyst complement peridot buttons in a bright birthday bib. The necklace takes some time to string, but you’ll love the results. Simple earrings, like these bird dangles, add just the right accent.

SUPPLIES

Necklace 23 in. (58 cm)

  • 6 15-in. (38 cm) strands 4 mm peridot beads
  • 2 15-in. (38 cm) strands 4 mm amethyst beads
  • 35–40 5 mm spacers
  • 36–40 in. (.9 m–1 m) chain, 4–5 mm links
  • flexible beading wire,.014 or.015
  • 2 5 mm jump rings
  • 70–80 crimp beads
  • 70–80 crimp covers
  • 70–80 Wire Guardians
  • lobster claw clasp and soldered jump ring
  • chainnose or crimping pliers
  • diagonal wire cutters
Earrings
  • 2 5–10 mm beads
  • 2 4 mm peridot beads
  • 2 4 mm amethyst beads
  • 2 3 mm spacers
  • 1 in. (2.5 cm) chain, 2–3 mm links
  • 4 1-in. (2.5 cm) head pins
  • pair of earring wires
  • chainnose and roundnose pliers
  • diagonal wire cutters

Necklace

1. Cut two 18–20-in. (46–51 cm) pieces of chain. Cut an 8-in. (20 cm) piece of beading wire. String a crimp bead, a Wire Guardian, and a chain’s center link. Go back through the crimp bead, tighten the wire, and crimp the crimp bead (How-Tos). Trim the excess wire. Use crimping pliers to close a crimp cover over the crimp.

2. String: 18 peridot beads, the end link of the first chain, five amethyst beads, peridot, spacer, peridot, five amethysts, an end link of the other chain, 18 peridots, crimp bead, Wire Guardian, the chain’s center link. Go back through the last few beads strung; tighten the wire. Crimp the crimp bead and trim the excess wire. Close a crimp cover over the crimp.

3. Skip a link and repeat the pattern in steps 1 and 2, gradually reducing the number of beads on each wire, until the beaded section is about 6 in. (15 cm) from top to bottom.

4. Trim each chain below the shortest beaded strand. Check the fit and trim chain from each end if necessary.

5. On one end, open a jump ring (How-Tos) and attach a lobster claw clasp. Repeat on the other side, substituting a soldered jump ring for the clasp.

1. For each earring: On a head pin, string a peridot bead and a spacer. Make a wrapped loop. Trim the head from a head pinand make a plain loop. String a 5–10 mm bead and an amethyst bead. Make a plain loop.

2. Cut a 1⁄2-in. (1.3 cm) piece of chain. Open the top loop of the plain-loop unit and attach the end link. Close the loop. Open the bottom loop and attach the peridot unit. Close the loop.

3. Open the loop of an earring wire. Attach the dangle and close the loop.
