1. On 2 yd. (1.8m) of thread, pick up four 15/0 seed beads. Leaving an 8-in. (20cm) tail, sew back through the first two beads again, and pull the beads into a ring (FIGURE 1, a–b). (The beads are shown in different colors to help clarify which beads to add in each step.)

2. Pick up three beads, sew back through the bead the thread is exiting, and continue on through the next new bead (b–c).

3. Repeat step 2 three times (c–d).

4. Pick up three beads, and sew through the bead the thread is exiting and the next two beads (d–e). This completes the first three diagonal rows, but they won’t take shape until you add the next three sets of beads.

5. Pick up three beads, and sew back through three beads in the previous row, starting with the bead the thread is exiting (FIGURE 2, a–b).

6. Pick up two beads, and sew back through four beads in the previous row (b–c).

7. Pick up two beads, sew through two beads in the previous row, and continue on through three beads in the new row (c–d).

8. Pick up two beads, and sew back through four beads in the previous row (d–e).

9. Pick up two beads, and sew back through three beads in the previous row (e–f).

10. Pick up three beads, and sew back through the bead the thread is exiting and on through the first new bead (f–g).

11. Pick up two beads, a pearl, and two beads. Sew back through the bead the thread is exiting and on through the next bead (g–h).

12. Repeat steps 5–10, but in step 10, sew through the first two beads (h–i). Repeat steps 5–11.

13. Continue stitching as in step 12 to the desired length, adding a pearl to every fourth row. If your thread is at least 24 in. (61cm) long, set it aside to use later. If it is shorter, weave it in the beadwork for about an inch (2.5cm). Tie a few half-hitch knots between beads, and trim the tail.

Toggle

1. On a 1-yd. (.9m) length of thread, pick up 16 15/0 seed beads. Stitch a flat peyote strip 16 beads long for 14 rows. Zip up the ends to form a tube.

2. Exiting a bead on one end of the tube, pick up a pearl, and sew into a bead on the opposite side of the tube (PHOTO). Repeat on the other end. Secure the tails.

3. Using the tail at the start of the necklace, pick up three beads, and sew through two beads at the center of the toggle. Sew back through the three beads and into the adjacent bead on the end of the necklace (FIGURE 3, a–b). Retrace the thread path a few times. Secure the tails, and trim.

Loop

1. Use the working thread to make a loop at the other end of the necklace, or secure a new 1-yd. length of thread, exiting at FIGURE 4, point a.

2. Pick up 37 beads, and sew into the adjacent bead on the necklace (a–b). Weave through the last two diagonal rows of the necklace and through the first bead in the loop (b–c).

3. Pick up one bead, and sew through the third bead in the loop (c–d). Continue in peyote around the loop, and secure the thread in the end of the necklace.

Tip!
If 15/0 seed beads intimidate you, try this project with 11/0s or larger beads until you get comfortable with the stitch. Click here to see how larger teardrop-shaped pearls work well with 11/0 seed beads.
