Everywhere I go lately, I see brooches of all sizes, shapes, and styles. Here’s a quick way to make your own using fun and easy-to-find crystal sliders. These components are so light, the brooches can sparkle on spring linens or winter wools.

SUPPLIES

  • 4 Crystal Innovations designer metal sliders with Swarovski crystals (Michaels, michaels.com)

  • 10g size 11/0 seed beads, purple pin finding with pendant bail (Michaels)
  • Nymo D, purple
  • beading needles, #12
  • E6000 adhesive
  • G-S Hypo Cement
  • Lacy’s Stiff Stuff

INSTRUCTIONS

Bead embroidery

1. Cut a 2-in. (5cm) square piece of Lacy’s Stiff Stuff. Divide the square into quarters by drawing a cross through the center. Center the crystal, and make a small mark on the square at each hole (PHOTO A).

2. Thread a comfortable length of Nymo, and knot the end. Come up through the Lacy’s at one of the marked points. Pick up the crystal, and slide it to the square. Go down through the square at the second marked point. Repeat until the crystal is secure.

3. Come up adjacent to the crystal, and backstitch a row of cylinder beads around the crystal (PHOTO B).When backstitching around design components, using fewer beads at a time results in a more fluid curve.

4. Line up a metal slider along the cross. Attach the slider as you did the crystal, taking care to keep it aligned. Repeat with three more sliders (PHOTO C).

5. Using 11/0 seed beads, backstitch a row around all four sliders (PHOTO D).

6. Fill in the remaining space with another row of 11/0s (PHOTO E) or other beads as desired.

Finishing

We’ve chosen a pin finding that doubles as a pendant bail. You may use a plain pin finding just as successfully.

1. Carefully trim the Lacy’s close to the beadwork.

2. Place the piece bead side up on a piece of Ultrasuede, and use it as a template to cut the Ultrasuede to match.

3. Center the pin finding on the Ultrasuede, and make an incision that will allow the finding to poke through.

4. Center the finding on the back of the embroidery. Using E6000, glue the Ultrasuede to the back of the embroidery, allowing the finding to emerge (PHOTO F). Let the piece dry completely.

5. If you prefer a crisp edge, use a marker that matches the Ultrasuede to camouflage the Lacy’s. For a beaded edging, start a comfortable length of thread, and knot the end. Pierce the inside edge of the Ultrasuede, and exit away from the beadwork (PHOTO G).

6. Pick up three 11/0s (or other beads as desired), and go through the Lacy’s and the Ultrasuede (PHOTO H). Repeat until the edges are covered. Secure the thread, and trim the tail. Dot the knot with G-S Hypo Cement.
Tip!
While our instructions are for the diamond-shaped brooch, you can create a variety of designs around sparkling crystal sliders. Some seed beads can give this piece an antique silver or marcasite effect. The gold brooch on in this photo uses bugle beads to mimic baguette-cut gemstones. The brooch above it surrounds one slider with crystals. For a more organic look, mix bead colors and sizes, and edge the brooch.
