Bezeled pearls

1. On 1½ yd. (1.4 m) of Fireline, pick up a 9 mm pearl and five 3 mm fire-polished beads, leaving a 5-in. (13 cm) tail. Sew through the pearl again (FIGURE 1, a–b). Pick up five 3 mms, and sew through the pearl and the first five 3 mms again (b–c)

2. Pick up a 3 mm, and sew through the next five 3 mms (c–d). Pick up a 3 mm, and sew through the next 3 mm (d–e) to create a ring of 12 3 mms around the center pearl.

3. Embellish the front of the pearl: Pick up a 3 mm, a 2 mm round crystal, and a 3 mm, and sew through the 3 mm your thread exited at the start of this step and the next 3 mm in the original ring (FIGURE 2, a–b)

4. Pick up a 3 mm and a 2 mm, and sew through the first 3 mm added in the previous stitch, the 3 mm your thread exited at the start of this stitch, and the following 3 mm in the original ring (b–c). Repeat this step nine more times (c–d), and snug up the beads.

5. Sew through the adjacent 3 mm added in the first stitch, pick up a 2 mm, and sew through the 3 mm added in the previous stitch (d–e).

6. Embellish the back of the pearl: With the thread exiting a 3 mm in the original ring, pick up a 15/0 seed bead, an 11/0 seed bead, and a 15/0, and sew through the 3 mm your thread exited at the start of this step and the next 3 mm in the original ring (FIGURE 3, a–b)

7. Pick up a 15/0 and an 11/0, and sew through the first 15/0 added in the previous stitch, the 3 mm your thread exited at the start of this step, and the next 3 mm in the original ring. Repeat this step nine times (b–c).

8. Sew through the 15/0 in the first stitch. Pick up an 11/0, and sew through the 15/0 added in the previous stitch (c–d), the 3 mm your thread exited at the start of this step, and the 15/0 and 11/0 in the first stitch (d–e)

9. Sew through all the 11/0s, and gently snug up the beads around the pearl. Retrace the thread path to reinforce.

10. Sew through the beadwork to exit a 2 mm on the front of the pearl. Pick up a 15/0, and sew through the next 2 mm (FIGURE 4, a–b). Repeat around the ring (b–c).

11. Create a picot embellishment: With the thread exiting a 2 mm, pick up three 15/0s, sew through the 2 mm your thread exited at the start of this step and the next 15/0 and 2 mm in the ring. Repeat this step 11 times, then sew through an adjacent 3 mm.

12. Pick up a 15/0, a 4 mm bicone crystal, and a 15/0, and sew through the next 3 mm in the bezel so the 4 mm sits diagonally between the two 3 mms (FIGURE 5). Repeat this step 11 times, and end the threads.

13. Make a total of four bezeled pearls to make the copper necklace or three bezeled pearls to make the purple necklace.
