Chevron heart ornament

Valentine’s Day is a wonderful time of year to say, “I love you” to the special people in our lives!

Giving this three-sided heart ornament, which combines multiple stitches and fringing techniques, is a clever way to make that romantic statement.

 SUPPLIES

  • 23 5mm bugle beads, gold
  • 23 4mm bicone crystals, red
  • 23 3mm bicone crystals, red
  • 10g size 11/0 seed beads, color A, red
  • 4g size 11/0 seed beads, color B, gold
  • nylon beading thread, size B
  • beading needles, #10

INSTRUCTIONS

Inner wall

The inner wall of the heart will be stitched in right-angle weave. Each vertical column has three beads. Between each vertical column, there are one or two beads.

Unit 1: On a comfortable length of thread, pick up 10 color A 11/0 seed beads, leaving a 6-in. (15cm) tail. Sew through the beads again to form a ring, and tie the working thread and tail with a square knot Sew through the next five As (FIGURE 1, a–b).

Unit 2: Pick up seven As, and, working in right-angle weave, sew through the three beads in the previous unit your thread exited at the start of this step (b–c). Sew through the next five As (c–d).

Units 3 and 4: Repeat unit 2 (d–e).

Unit 5: Work as in unit 2, but pick up only five As (e–f).

Units 6–22: Follow figure 1 to determine whether to pick up five or seven As for the remaining stitches of the inner wall.

Unit 23: Connect unit 1 to unit 22: Pick up an A, and sew through three As in unit 1 (FIGURE 2, a–b). Pick up an A, and sew through three As in unit 22 (b–c). Sew through the first A added in this step (c–d).

 Front Surface

The front will be stitched using chevron chain. It is sewn to the horizontal beads of the inside wall as you work around the graph. The ornament will be woven with red beads; however, the figure shows the inside wall beads as blue and the chevron chain beads as red. 


Loop 1: Pick up nine As, and sew back through the first bead picked up (figure 3, a–b). Sew through the next two horizontal As in the inner wall (b–c).

Loop 2: Pick up three As, and sew through the seventh A of the previous loop (c–d). Pick up five As, and sew back through the first A picked up in this loop (d–e). Sew through the next two horizontal beads in the inner wall (e–f).

Loops 3–9: Repeat loop 2, noting the bead count changes in the horizontal beads of the inner wall and the horizontal beads at the top of each loop (f–g).

Loop 10: This is the center top of the heart. Pick up three As and sew through the bead shown (g–h). Pick up one A, and sew back through two As (h–i). Pick up one A and sew through two horizontal As in the inner wall (i–j).

Loop 11: Pick up three As, and sew through the bead shown (j–k). Pick up six As, and sew back through the first bead picked up in this loop (k–l). Sew through one horizontal bead in the inner wall (l–m).

Loops 12–21: Repeat loop 2, noting the bead count changes as indicated in m–n.

Loop 22: Pick up three As, and sew through the bead shown from the previous loop (n–o). Pick up two As, and sew through the forth bead strung in loop 1 (o–p). Pick up two As, and sew through the first bead picked up in this loop and one horizontal bead (p–q). Sew through the next three As in the inside wall to the other side of the ornament (q–r).

Back surface

The beads that will be added to this side are shown as brown beads in figure 3, and they will be used to connect the remaining edge of the inner wall and the front surface.

1. Pick up four As, and sew through the two As at the top of loop 1 (r–s). Pick up three As, and sew back through the first A picked up in this step (s–t). Sew through the next two horizontal As (t–u).

2. Pick up three As, and sew through the bead shown (u–v). Sew through two As, pick up three As, and sew back through the first A picked up in this step (v–w). Sew through the next two horizontal beads (w–x).

3. Continue around, connecting the inner wall to the top edge of the heart (x–y).

4. Pick up three As and sew through the next two As (y–z). Sew through the A picked up in step 1 (z–A). Pick up two As and sew through the first A picked up in this step (A–B). Sew through the next horizontal bead (B–C).
