Cherry blossom necklace

Stitch a spring floral garland to wear year-round
Cherry blossom necklace key

Combine fiber-optic glass and gemstone beads with crystal briolettes to make a lovely necklace reminiscent of cherry blossoms. Make one in any color palette to show off the shades of your favorite flower.

In crossweave technique, two needles cross through a bead (or beads) so the needle that was on the right side is now on the left and vice versa.

Blossoms

1.
Thread a needle on each end of 24 in. (61 cm) of Fireline. With one needle, pick up five 11/0 seed beads, and center them on the thread. Cross the other needle through the last 11/0 picked up to form a ring (FIGURE 1).

2. Work in crossweave technique as follows: With the right-hand needle, pick up a color A 4 mm round bead, an 11/0, a 6 mm round bead, an 11/0, and an A (FIGURE 2, a–b). With the left-hand needle, cross through the last two beads picked up (aa–bb).

3. With the left-hand needle, sew through the next 11/0 in the center ring (b–c). With the right-hand needle, pick up a 6 mm, an 11/0, and an A (bb–cc). Cross the left-hand needle through the last two beads picked up (c–d).

4. With the left-hand needle, sew through the next 11/0 in the center ring (cc–dd). With the right-hand needle, pick up a 6 mm, an 11/0, and an A (d–e). Cross the left-hand needle through the last two beads picked up (dd–ee).

5. Repeat step 3 (e–f and ee–ff).

6. With the right-hand needle, pick up a 6 mm (f–g). With the left-hand needle, sew through the next 11/0 in the center ring, the adjacent A and 11/0 added in step 2, and the 6 mm just added (ff–gg). Snug up the beads so the beadwork cups around the edge, and end the threads.

7. Make a total of nine blossoms.

Centerpiece

1. Position the blossoms on your work surface as shown in FIGURE 3. Thread a needle on each end of 2 yd. (1.8 m) of Fireline, and center the thread in a 6 mm in a blossom on one end (a and aa).

2. With the top needle, pick up three 11/0s, a color B 4 mm glass pearl, and three 11/0s. With the bottom needle, pick up four 11/0s, a briolette, and four 11/0s. Cross both needles through a 6 mm in the next blossom (a–b and aa–bb).

3. With the bottom needle, pick up an 11/0, and sew through the next 6 mm around the perimeter. Repeat twice (b–c). With the top needle, pick up an 11/0, and sew through the next 6 mm around the perimeter of the blossom. Repeat once (bb–cc). Both needles will be exiting opposite sides of the same 6 mm.

4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 to connect all nine blossoms.

5. Repeat step 2 once, but cross both needles through a new A instead of a 6 mm in a blossom.

Neck straps

1. With each needle, pick up seven 11/0s, and cross both needles through an A. Repeat for the desired length neck strap. For a 17 1⁄2-in. (44.5 cm) necklace, there are 11 units in each neck strap.

2. With each needle, pick up two 11/0s, and cross through half of the clasp and the 11/0s added with the other needle. With each needle, retrace the thread path through the entire neck strap, crossing through the As to reinforce. End the threads.

3. Thread a needle on each end of 1 yd. (.9 m) of Fireline, and center the thread in the 6 mm on the remaining end of the necklace. Repeat step 2 of “Centerpiece,” but cross the needles through a new A instead of a 6 mm in a blossom. Repeat steps 1 and 2 of “Neck straps.”
