Spring snowflakes necklace

Use this easy technique to create an elegant chain of crystal snowflakes that drapes dramatically around your neck.

The icy look of crystals will keep you cool into the summer. 

SUPPLIES

Necklace 18 in. (46 cm)

  • bicone crystals
    • 109 6 mm
    • 178 4 mm 
    • 132 3 mm silver beads
  • clasp
  • 6 in. (15 cm) 22-gauge wire
  • Fireline 6 lb. or 8 lb. test
  • beading needles, #12
  • chainnose pliers
  • roundnose pliers
  • wire cutters

1. On 2 yd. (1.8 m) of Fireline, pick up a repeating pattern of a 3 mm silver bead and a 6 mm bicone crystal four times. Tie the beads into a ring with a square knot, and sew through the next 3 mm in the ring (FIGURE 1).

2. Pick up a 4 mm bicone crystal, a 3 mm, and a 4 mm. Sew through the 3 mm your thread exited at the start of this step, and through the next 6 mm and 3 mm in the ring (FIGURE 2, a–b).

3. Pick up three 4 mms, and sew through the 3 mm your thread exited at the start of this step. Sew through the next 6 mm and 3 mm in the ring (b–c).

4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 (c–d), then sew through the next four beads and the next 4 mm and 3 mm (d–e).

5. Pick up a repeating pattern of a 6 mm and a 3 mm three times, then pick up a 6 mm. Sew through the 3 mm your thread exited at the start of this step, and the next 6 mm and 3 mm (FIGURE 3, a–b).

6. Repeat steps 3 and 4 (b–c).

7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 until you have 22 6 mm units. End the threads

8. Add 30 in. (76 cm) of thread on one end of the necklace, leaving a 6-in. (15 cm) tail and exiting the inside top 4 mm (FIGURE 4, point a).

9. Pick up a 3 mm, a 6 mm, and a 3 mm. Sew through the next 4 mm, 3 mm, and 4 mm at the top of the next 6 mm unit (a–b). Repeat (b–c) until you reach the other end of the necklace. End the threads.

10. Cut a 3-in. (7.6 cm) piece of 22-gauge wire. Make the first half of a wrapped loop, and slide the loop through the end 3 mm on one end of the necklace. Complete the wraps (PHOTO A). Make the first half of a wrapped loop above the wraps, attach one half of the clasp, and complete the wraps. 

11. Repeat step 10 on the other end of the necklace (PHOTO B).
