Creature comforts ornament

A fresh blanket of snow, bright-lit windows, and a furry friend in the yard — these are my creature comforts during the winter months. This peyote stitch band hugs the glass ball ornament and attaches to the top with a snowflake-like netted motif. The band measures 8 1⁄4 in. (21 cm), so you can easily adapt it to make a bracelet.

Peyote band

1. On a comfortable length of Fireline, work the pattern on p. 3 in flat even-count peyote stitch using 11/0 Delica cylinder beads. Start at either the top-left or bottom-right corner of the pattern, and leave a 6-in. (15 cm) tail. End and add thread as needed as you work.

2. To work the edging: With your working thread exiting an edge cylinder at one end of the band, pick up three 13/0 Charlottes, sew down through the next edge cylinder, and sew up through the following edge cylinder. Repeat this stitch to embellish the entire edge. Sew through the beadwork, and embellish the other edge in the same way.

3. Wrap the peyote band around the center of the ornament, and zip up the end rows. Retrace the thread path of the join, and end the working thread and tail.

Netted top

1. On 2 yd. (1.8 m) of Fireline, pick up 42 11/0 seed beads. Tie the beads into a ring with a square knot, leaving a 6-in. (15 cm) tail, and sew through a few more beads. End the tail.

2. Pick up an 11/0, a color A 4 mm round crystal, and three 11/0s. Sew back through the A, pick up an 11/0, and sew through the 11/0 your thread exited at the start of this step in the same direction as before. Continue through the next seven beads in the ring (FIGURE, a–b).

3. Repeat step 2 five times to complete the round, and sew through the beadwork to exit the center 11/0 at the tip of the first A (b–c).

4. Reversing the direction of your stitching, pick up 11 11/0s, and sew through the center 11/0 at the tip of the previous A (c–d). Repeat this stitch to complete the round, and sew through the first six 11/0s added in this step (d–e).

5. Pick up an 11/0, a color B 4 mm round crystal, and three 11/0s. Sew back through the B, pick up an 11/0, and sew through the 11/0 your thread exited at the start of this step. Continue through the next five 11/0s, the center 11/0 at the tip of the next A, and the following six 11/0s (e–f).

6. Repeat step 5 to complete the round, and sew through the beadwork to exit the center 11/0 at the tip of the first B.

7. Reversing the direction of your stitching, pick up 17 11/0s, and sew through the 11/0 at the tip of the previous B. Repeat this stitch to complete the round, and sew through the first nine 11/0s added in this step. Place the beadwork on the ornament.

8. Pick up an 11/0, an A, and an 11/0. Sew through a center Charlotte in the peyote band edging directly below where your thread is exiting. Pick up an 11/0, sew back through the A, pick up an 11/0, and sew through the 11/0 your thread exited at the start of this step. Continue through the next eight 11/0s, the 11/0 at the tip of the next B, and the following nine 11/0s.

9. Pick up an 11/0, an A, and an 11/0. Skip nine center Charlottes from the one you sewed through in the previous step, and sew through the 10th center Charlotte. Pick up an 11/0, sew back through the A, pick up an 11/0, and sew through the 11/0 your thread exited at the start of this step (FIGURE). Continue through the next eight 11/0s, the 11/0 at the tip of the next B, and the following nine 11/0s.

10. Work as in step 9, but skip 10 center Charlottes to sew through the 11th.

11. Repeat step 9 twice.

12. Repeat step 10 once more. End the working thread.
