Forget-me-not bracelet

Turn a right-angle weave bracelet into a pasture in bloom

Forget me knot bracelet

My family loves to hike in the Blue Ridge Mountains, and in the summer I look forward to seeing clumps of cheerful blue forget-me-nots peeking out from under rocks along the side of the trail. Here I’ve captured them in a bracelet, though there’s no need to limit yourself to blue – choose any color combination to represent your favorite wildflower.

The instructions below show how to start this project by making the beaded beads. To view full instructions that include the bracelet base, clasp and embellishment, download the free project PDF

Beaded beads

1. On 1 yd. (.9 m) of Fireline, pick up four 8/0 seed beads, leaving a 6-in. (15 cm) tail. Tie the beads into a ring with a square knot, and sew through the first bead again.

2. Working in right-angle weave, pick up three 8/0s, sew through the 8/0 your thread is exiting in the same direction, and continue through the first two 8/0s just added. Repeat once to make a three-stitch strip of right-angle weave.

3. Wrap the strip around a 2-3 mm dowel if desired, and join the strip into a ring: Pick up an 8/0, sew through the end 8/0 in the first stitch of the strip, pick up an 8/0, and sew through the end 8/0 in the last stitch of the strip. Retrace the thread path through this connecting stitch, and exit an 8/0 along the bottom edge of the ring (Figure 1).

4. Pick up a color B 11/0 seed bead, and sew through the next 8/0 along the bottom edge of the ring (Figure 2). Repeat three times.

5. Sew through the beadwork to exit an 8/0 along the top edge of the ring. Pick up a B 11/0, and sew through the next 8/0 along the top edge of the ring. Repeat three times, then sew through a center 8/0 in the ring (Figure 3).

6. Pick up a color A 11/0 seed bead, a color C 15/0 seed bead, a color B 15/0 seed bead, a C 15/0, and an A 11/0. Sew through the next center 8/0 in the ring so that the beads just picked up cross the stitch diagonally (Figure 4). Repeat three times, and sew through the first A 11/0, C 15/0, and B 15/0 added in this step.

7. Working around the ring in the opposite direction as before, pick up a C 15/0 and an A 11/0, and sew through the next center 8/0 in the ring (Figure 5).

8. Pick up an A 11/0 and a C 15/0, and sew through the next B 15/0 (Figure 6).

9. Alternate steps 7 and 8 around the beaded bead until each right-angle weave stitch is embellished with a crisscross of beads. End the working thread and tail.

10. Make a second beaded bead.
