Single chevron chain

Chevron chain figure 1
Figure 1

1. Attach a stop bead to a comfortable length of thread, leaving a 6-in. (15 cm) tail.

2. Pick up three color A seed beads, three color B seed beads, three As, three color C seed beads, three As, and three Bs (Figure 1, a–b). Sew back through the first three As (b–c).

3. Pick up three Cs, three As, and three Bs, and sew back through the last three As added in the previous stitch (Figure 2).

4. Repeat step 3 to the desired length (Figure 3). The direction of the Vs will alternate with each stitch.
Single variations

Figures 4, 5, and 6 show just a few of the possible variations of “Single chevron chain,” all of which follow the basic principle of using a connector, a pair of diagonal strips, and a bridge. In “Single chevron chain,” the group of three As represents a connector, the Bs represent the diagonal strips, and the Cs represent a bridge.

To work the first stitch, pick up a connector, a diagonal strip, a connector, a bridge, a connector, and a diagonal strip, and sew through the first connector. In each subsequent stitch, pick up a bridge, a connector, and a diagonal strip, and sew through the previous connector. Once you have the basic pattern, you can create variations.

In Figure 4, large beads create a dense stitch. A seed bead is used as the connector; a seed bead, 4 mm round crystal, and seed bead are used for each diagonal strip; and a seed bead, a 6 mm vintage glass bead, and a seed bead are used as the bridge.

In Figure 5, more beads in the diagonal strip add height. A 6 mm pearl is used as the connector; two seed beads, a 3 mm rondelle, and two seed beads are used for each diagonal strip; and a seed bead, a 3 mm rondelle, and a seed bead are used as the bridge.

In Figure 6, larger beads in the bridge add width. The connector alternates between a seed bead at the bottom and a 4 mm pearl at the top; each diagonal strip is made of a seed bead, a 4 mm bicone crystal, and a seed bead; and the bridges alternate between a 5 mm and a 6 mm bicone crystal with a seed bead on both sides of each crystal.

Adding rows

1. Follow steps 1–4 of “Single chevron chain.”

2. With your thread exiting a bottom A, sew through the following three Cs, three As, three Bs, three As, and three Cs at the top (Figure 7, a–b).

3. Pick up three As, three Bs, three As, three Cs, three As, and three Bs. Sew back through the first three As added and the three Cs in the previous row your thread exited at the start of this step (b–c).

4. Pick up three As and three Bs, and sew through the last three As added in the previous step (c–d).

5. Pick up three Cs, three As, and three Bs, and sew through the three As added in the previous step and the next three Cs in the previous row (d–e).

6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 to the desired length.

Connecting the ends into a ring

1. Follow steps 1–4 of “Single chevron chain,” ending with an even number of stitches and the same number of bridges along the top and bottom edges.

2. Pick up three Cs, and sew through the corresponding three As in the first stitch (Figure 8, a–b).

3. Pick up three Bs, and sew through the corresponding three As in the previous stitch (b–c).

4. Pick up three Cs, and sew through the corresponding three As in the first stitch (c–d).

Tubular chevron chain

You can create tubular chevron chain two ways:

  • Follow the steps in “Single chevron chain” to the desired length, “Adding rows” to the desired height, and “Connecting the ends” to create the tube.
  • Follow the steps in “Single chevron chain” to the desired length, “Connecting the ends” to create the tube, and “Adding rows” to the desired length of the tube.
