HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN CREATING? HOW DID YOU LEARN YOUR CRAFT?

I was looking for a portable hobby as I was traveling a lot for work. I tried scrapbooking and it wasn’t my thing. I purchased a basic wire working/stringing book, then discovered the Bead & Button show, taking my first class and went a little nuts on the showroom floor! I’ve been beading ever since, and in 2003, began doing bead crochet. It’s the perfect traveling companion, plus I love wearing multiple bracelets at one time.

WHAT’S YOUR GOOFIEST/MOST EMBARRASSING MISTAKE AS A TEACHER?

For a beginning bead crochet class, I left my student’s starter tubes at home--and class was 1 1/2 hours away!.  It was OK, though, the students did great without them, of course!

WHAT IS YOUR WORKSPACE LIKE?

Well, I have a spare room that I use but it’s also storage. I have a large bendable Ottlight over my couch corner and I crochet while sitting there. It's my favorite spot to crochet in. The cats curl up next to me, I have my coffee and crochet!

WHAT'S THE MOST UNUSUAL THING THAT YOU HAVE IN YOUR WORKSPACE?

A bread rack, hands down!  It holds a lot of my beads and bead kit supplies.  Here is a picture when I first got it from a local auction house.

WHEN YOU SIT DOWN TO CREATE A NEW DESIGN, WHICH COMES FIRST: THE IDEA OR THE BEADS?

Oh the bead colors…  Color is my real inspiration and I try to come up with new ways to design bead crochet projects using lots of color treatments.  My new design series called “Fabric Weaving” takes color play from weaving of all forms, mixing and melding waves of color that only weaving can deliver and using beads as the color medium.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE MATERIALS TO USE IN YOUR WORK?

Round and cylindrical shaped beads in sizes 8, 11 & 11-Delica/Aiko seed beads.  I also love 100% cotton crochet threads in vibrant, often contrasting colors that add another dimension to the bead crochet piece.

WE LOVE YOUR BOOK, BEAD CROCHET BASICS. DO YOU DO REGULAR NON-BEADED CROCHET AS WELL?

Not as much as I used to since I crochet full-time now, but I buy and make other people’s kits, take classes when I can, and make quick projects.  Right angle weave is my favorite “other” beading technique!

DO YOU THINK THAT SOMEONE WHO IS A SKILLED CROCHETER BUT HAS NEVER MADE JEWELRY WOULD FIND THE TRANSITION DIFFICULT? WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE?

Many of my students are yarn crocheters and I suggest they give it a try!  They have an easier time learning the single stitch bead crochet technique, as it’s the same stitch, and holding your thread is easy for them!

WHO WOULD YOUR BOOK BE A GREAT GIFT FOR?

It is the perfect book for beginning bead crocheters or those who have had difficulty learning and have given up!
