5 Questions with Angi Mallory Dega

0417_Winner3_1200x628
This tiny treasure was submitted by Angi Dega of Moonflower Jewelry, headquartered in Taos, NM, USA. Her description of her piece and materials:

A real acorn cap cast in sterling silver is the roof of this tiny fairy home. This necklace has a copper door and two windows. There is a rose garden in the back of the cottage with 4mm cabochons of citrine and amber for flowers. A lovely potted peridot sits on the front step.

It hangs from a 32-inch sterling chain, and a tiny newly-born oak leaf hangs from the bail of the necklace. I cast the leaf in sterling early this spring when the oak trees were just sprouting new leaves. The cottage measures 1 1/2" long and 7/8" wide overall.

Angi grew up in Taos, NM and made her first jewelry piece at age 17. Her friend, Lorelei Brown Loveless, taught her how to make silver coin conchos that she took around to the museum shops and sold. She later attended Madison Area Technical College in Madison, Wisconsin.

ARE YOU A PROFESSIONAL JEWELRY-MAKER, OR IS THIS A HOBBY? HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN CREATING?

I have made jewelry for many years as a hobby, about 6 years ago I started selling on Etsy and in retail shops in Taos, San Francisco and Denver.

WHAT IS YOUR DESIGN ESTHETIC?

Growing up in New Mexico, I have always been drawn to local art and color. Many of my pieces are modified milagros and sacred heart designs. I also love making small sculpture houses and gardens.

WHAT STYLE OF JEWELRY DO YOU MAKE? HAVE YOU EVER WORKED IN DIFFERENT STYLES/MEDIUMS?

I love casting organic material like acorn tops, leaves and seed pods in sterling silver. I guess I would call my jewelry style “art jewelry”.

NAME THE MOST UNUSUAL THING THAT YOU HAVE IN YOUR STUDIO OR WORKSPACE.

The view! I live in an adobe house and my studio has a mud fireplace that keeps me warm on snowy days. It's so earthy and cozy that I can’t wait to get to work in the morning.

WHERE CAN PEOPLE SEE MORE OF YOUR WORK?

At my Etsy shop, etsy.com/shop/angidega, on Facebook at moonflower jewelry or on Instagram moonflower_jewelry.
