5 questions with Challenge winner Elena Vezyroglou

Curious about what emerged from our February Design Challenge, SHADOWS? We asked our designers to consider this: Spring is getting closer, the sun is in a new place in the sky and shadows fall on the melting snow. The groundhog peeks his head out to investigate, but the woods still lay bare and silent, waiting for renewal. A shadow, a two-dimensional silhouette: blocking the light yet casting a lovely outline. The mood is eerie and quiet as the dark and the light battle for their rightful places.

One of our winners was Elena Vezyroglou, the
creator behind elenaVjewels. Her studio is based in the center of her hometown Thessaloniki, in northern Greece. Her winning entry in the Design Challenge was these delicate three-dimensional earrings, called FIGURES. Made from silver wire, they provide an elegant outline of a figure while the rest is left to the imagination, much in the same way as a shadow does.

WHERE DO YOU FIND INSPIRATION FOR YOUR WORK?

I believe you can be inspired by almost anything. A shape of a building, a painting, nature. Often I will start one project and it will lead me to something else or give me an idea to go in a completely different direction.

ARE YOU A PROFESSIONAL JEWELRY-MAKER, OR IS THIS A HOBBY?

I am a professional jeweller. I started creating in 2008 as a hobby and first learned by attending classes and reading a lot of books or searching through the internet. In 2010 I decided to follow a more professional eduction in silversmithing and attended a silversmithing and jewellery design school.

WHAT STYLE OF JEWELRY DO YOU MAKE? HAVE YOU EVER WORKED IN DIFFERENT STYLES/MEDIUMS?

I like creating minimalistic elegant pieces of jewellery. Geometric forms are also often part of my designs.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE MATERIALS TO USE IN YOUR WORK?

I love working with silver, combined with precious gemstones or other metals especially bronze.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU?

I am very excited about this next project. I am working on large necklaces and earrings made out of many squares in different shapes and sizes. Some of them will also be combined with precious gemstones of different colors.
