For our January 2017 Design Challenge, we asked our readers to create pieces of jewelry that fit the theme SOLSTICE.

The Winter Solstice, the shortest day and longest night of the year, is a turning point. It's the moment when the Earth begins its journey towards Spring. In many traditions, this astronomical phenomenon signifies rebirth and is celebrated with gatherings, rituals, and bonfires. Cyclical patterns, elliptical orbits, sunsets and sunrises, ancient mythologies: They're all elements of this astrological milestone. Read on to find out how our Design Challenge winners interpreted this theme.

OUR WINNERS

The winner of our Beading category is Robin Gower of Point Pleasant, NJ for "Northern Dawn." The delicate colors of the labradorite cabochon suggest a clear midwinter sunrise. The collar was embroidered with seed beads, freshwater pearls and Swarovski crystals, backed in leather and finished with a bronze toggle clasp.

Our Reader's Choice Award goes to "Under the Solstice Moon" created by Susan Cologne of Richmond, VA. This neckpiece tells a story, says Susan: "The moon gazing hare sits beneath his wintry tree watching the sparkling solstice moon." Susan appears to have used a sculptural peyote cellini spiral incorporating multiple bead sizes with a wirework setting surrounding a rabbit bead.

The winner of our Wire category is "After The Rain" by Madeline Reganis of Marlton, NJ. The interpretation of solstice as a "new beginning" is represented by these wire-wrapped crystal and stone earrings. "It storms a lot where I live, even in the winter," Madeline explains. "After every storm a double rainbow appears in the exact same location, which is the inspiration behind these fun earrings. The beauty after a heavy storm always serves a new beginning."
