5 Questions with Challenge winner Romana Ivansek

Geometry Stitching Winner

Romana Ivanek is a graphic designer, and making jewelry is her hobby. She lives and works in Zagreb, Croatia, and says, "if you don't know where Croatia is and never visited, you don't know what you're missing!" She has five nieces who are the reason that she started making jewelry. As she explains, "It was a real challenge getting them Christmas gifts, because I like my gifts to be original and one of a kind."

Romana was one of the winners of Facet's GEOMETRY Design Challenge, where jewelry makers were asked to create a piece representing that magical place where mathematics and art intersect.

HOW DID YOU LEARN TO MAKE JEWELRY?

I learned most from the web and by trial and errors. If I don't like how a piece of jewelry turned out in the end, I will take it apart and start from the beginning. Making something unique and personal is a challenge and I like challenges!

WHAT’S THE GOOFIEST MISTAKE THAT YOU'VE MADE?

There were a few. For example, ordering only one Rivoli for earrings even though everyone has two ears, trying to thread a needle and just begging it to go through, or making my first loom out of a shoe box because I couldn't wait for the one I ordered to arrive.

WHAT STYLE OF JEWELRY DO YOU MAKE? HAVE YOU EVER WORKED IN DIFFERENT STYLES/MEDIUMS?

I don't really have a style, I just do the things I like. Although I would like to try working with wires and modeling clay, but I don't want to start working on something new until I use up all my beads and materials. I constantly order new beads so I don’t think my stockpile will run out. That way I don’t think I will ever have the time to try new techniques. Maybe in another life!

WHERE DO YOU FIND INSPIRATION FOR YOUR WORK?

Everywhere around me. When I’m not in a good mood, I make dark jewelry, but when the sun is shining outside, I take every color I have and try to combine them in a tasteful manner.

WHAT PROJECTS ARE YOU WORKING ON, AND WHERE CAN PEOPLE SEE MORE OF YOUR WORK?

I can’t tell you yet. Christmas is coming and I don’t want to spoil the surprise for my five nieces from the beginning of the story. But you can follow me on Facebook or check out my Etsy store, All Unikat nakit!

Romana's bracelet also appears in the February issue of Bead&Button magazine, on newsstands now!
