Strawberry chain mail pendant

Add a new dimension to a traditional Japanese weave

SUPPLIES 

Pendant 1 1⁄2 in. (38 mm)

  • 18-gauge (1.0 mm) aluminum jump rings
    • 3 7.1 mm inner diameter (ID)
    • 7 6.0 mm ID
    • 6 5.2 mm ID
    • 6 4.8 mm ID
    • 6 4.0 mm ID
    • 18 3.6 mm ID
  • 138 20-gauge (0.8 mm) jump rings, 3.2 mm ID 
  • 6 in. (15.2 cm) 20-gauge (0.8 mm) wire
  • 3 ft. (91.4 cm) 24-gauge (0.5 mm) wire
  • 3 12–14 mm Czech glass leaf beads
  • 12–14 3/0 seed beads (silver-lined ruby; www.artbeads.com)
  • 1 2 1⁄2-in. (64 mm) head pin
  • 1 8–10 mm leafy bead cap
  • Chain mail toolbox
  • Wirework toolbox
  • Masking tape
  • 2 mm mandrel or looping pliers

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Close six 3.2 mm (small) jump rings, and open all the remaining rings. Slide an open 4 mm ring through four small rings, and close the ring. Slide another 4 mm ring through the same four small rings, and close the ring. This is called doubling. 

Split the small rings into two pairs, and continue attaching rings to make a 2+2 chain with six 3.2 mm rings and four 4 mm rings (PHOTO A).

2. Bring together the pairs of small rings on each end of the chain. Slide a 4 mm ring through all four small rings, and close the ring. Double the 4 mm ring. The rings should resemble a triangle.

 

Attach six small rings to each pair of 4 mm rings (PHOTO B).

3. Divide each group of six small rings into three pairs. Slide a 4.8 mm ring through two pairs of small rings attached to adjacent 4 mm rings. Double the 4.8 mm ring. Repeat twice more so that the rings resemble a larger triangle.

 

Attach eight small rings to each pair of 4.8 mm rings (PHOTO C).

4. Working on one side of the triangle, slide a 5.2 mm ring (shown in blue) through pairs of small rings attached to one set of 4.8 mm (red) rings, the 4 mm (green) rings, and the other set of 4.8 mm (red) rings. Double the 5.2 mm ring. 

 

Attach six small rings to the pair of 5.2 mm rings (PHOTO D).

5. Repeat step 4 twice more for the remaining sides of the triangle. The piece will start to cup slightly (PHOTO E).

6. Slide a 3.6 mm (yellow) ring through pairs of small rings attached to adjacent 5.2 mm (blue) rings and 4.8 mm (red) rings. Double the 3.6 mm ring. Attach six small rings to the pair of 3.6 mm rings (PHOTO F).

 

Repeat this step twice more around the outside edge of the piece, making sure you are connecting to 5.2 mm and 4.8 mm rings that are not already connected to the previous 3.6 mm rings.

7. Slide a 3.6 mm (yellow) ring through pairs of small rings attached to adjacent 3.6 mm (yellow) rings, 4.8 mm (red) rings, and 5.2 mm (blue) rings. Double the 3.6 mm ring. Attach four small rings to the pair of 3.6 mm rings (PHOTO G).

 

Repeat this step twice more around the outside edge of the piece.

8. Slide a 6 mm (orange) ring through pairs of small rings attached to adjacent 3.6 mm (yellow) rings, 5.2 mm (blue) rings, and 3.6 mm (yellow) rings. Double the 6 mm ring. Attach six small rings to the pair of 6 mm rings (PHOTO H). 

 

Repeat this step twice more around the outside edge of the piece.

9. Slide a 7.1 mm (purple) ring through pairs of small rings attached to adjacent 6 mm (orange) rings, two sets of 3.6 mm (yellow) rings, and 6 mm (orange) rings (PHOTO I).

Repeat this step twice more around the outside edge of the piece (PHOTO J).
