Celtic diamond chain mail pendant

Substitute glass donuts for soldered jump rings to add a snap of color to a Celtic pendant. This quick and easy chain mail design can be made with aluminum, copper, niobium, or brass jump rings or in classic sterling silver.

SUPPLIES

Pendant 15⁄16 x 15⁄16

  • jump rings 
    • 12 10 mm inside diameter (ID), 14-gauge (1.63 mm), large
    • 12 6.4 mm ID, 16-gauge (1.29 mm), medium
    • 9 or 10 4.4 mm ID, 16-gauge (1.29 mm), small
  • 4 glass donut beads 
  • chain with attached clasp
  • Chain mail toolbox

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Open four large 10 mm ID 14-gauge (1.63 mm) jump rings and close eight large jump rings. Open 12 medium 6.4 mm ID, 16-gauge (1.29 mm) and 10 small 4.4 mm ID, 16-gauge (1.29 mm) jump rings.

 

2. Slide two glass donut beads onto an open large jump ring. Close the ring (PHOTO 1A).

Slide a glass donut onto an open large ring, and slide the ring through one of the glass donuts on the previous section of chain. Close the ring (PHOTO 1B).

Slide an open large ring through the last glass donut added to the chain. Attach a fourth glass donut (PHOTO 1C), and close the ring.

Slide one open large ring through the glass donuts on both ends of the chain section to form a square. Close the ring (PHOTO 1D).

3. Position a closed large ring on the top side of the square so that it encircles a glass donut. Position a second closed large ring in the corresponding place on the underside of the square (PHOTO 2A).

Slide a medium ring through the eye between the glass donut and the large doubled rings and through the ring from the initial square. Close the ring. Repeat to add a ring on the opposite side (PHOTO 2B).

4. Slide a medium ring down through the eye underneath the same glass donut on the right-hand side. Bring the ring up through the top left ring of the initial square, outside of the doubled rings so that the new ring sits in a diagonal position underneath the glass donut (PHOTO 3).

5. Repeat steps 3–4 three times (PHOTO 4) to add rings to each side of the square.

6. Pull together the two medium rings positioned through the eyes and above the glass donut on one side of the square. Slide a small ring through these two rings (PHOTO 5A).

Slide a second ring through the two medium rings attached to the pendant and through the previous small ring to create a Mobius effect (PHOTO 5B).

Repeat to add a Mobius ring pair to the other three sides of the pendant (PHOTO 5C).

7. Use small jump rings to attach a chain to one of the ring pairs (PHOTO 6).
