Gaelic rose pendant

Create a rose with colorful jump ring "petals"

Use a chain mail weave in this project for the blooms. You can either create a single rose and string it as a pendant, or link multiple blooms to create a statement bracelet.

Read the project instructions below, or click here for the free project PDF.

We’ll use the following designations to refer to the different jump rings in this project:

  • A rings = 16-gauge, 4.8 mm ID (silver)
  • B rings = 16-gauge, 6.4 mm ID (blue and turquoise)
  • C rings = 16-gauge, 9.1 mm ID (turquoise)
  • D rings = 14-gauge, 12.7 mm ID (silver)
  • E rings = 14-gauge, 19.1 mm ID (silver)

For a bracelet, connect five rose components with pairs of 18-gauge (SWG, 1.2 mm), 4.8 mm ID aluminum rings. Use four 4.8 mm rings at each end to attach a four-strand tube clasp.

1. Open an A ring, and close four blue B rings. Add the B rings to the A ring (a), and close it.

2. Open a D ring, slide it through the four blue B rings (b), and close it. Set this unit aside until step 6.

3. Make a 1+1 chain alternating between four D rings and three turquoise B rings. Lay the chain flat.

4.Open an E ring. Following the route of the arrows as shown (c), weave the E ring through the three turquoise B rings from step 3. For each turquoise ring, start on the side toward you, and pass the E ring through to the other side (d). Close the E ring.

5. Lay the piece flat with the D rings forming a square. Open a turquoise B ring, and slide it through the two end D rings and around the E ring, making sure to match the angle of the other turquoise rings (e). Close the B ring.

6. Pick up the unit from step 2. Adjust the ring placement so the A ring forms a bull’s-eye inside the D ring. Place this unit in the center of the E ring in the second unit (f).

7. Tilt one of the blue B rings of the first unit clockwise until it nearly touches a turquoise B ring in the second unit (g). The other blue B rings will move around until you anchor them in place later. If necessary, use a piece of scrap wire to manipulate the rings.

8. Open a blue B ring, and slide it through the center of the adjusted blue B ring, circling around the D ring of the first unit and the E ring of the second unit (h). Close the ring. This blue B ring acts as an anchor, locking the clockwise-leaning blue B ring in place.

9. Rotate the entire piece 90 degrees clockwise, and repeat steps 7 and 8. Repeat to secure the remaining blue B rings (i, orange rings).

10. Flip the piece over. Open a C ring, and slide it up through one of the blue B “anchor” rings that you added in steps 8 and 9, over the adjacent turquoise B ring, and through the two outer D rings (j). Close the ring.

Designer's Note
This weave is very sensitive to ring sizes. If you find your piece is too loose, add four additional A rings (shown in orange, above right) on the back of the piece, weaving each A ring through two D rings.

11. Repeat step 10 for the remaining three sides (k).

12. Use a pair of 4 mm rings to attach the component to a bail, and string the pendant as desired.

Designer’s note: This weave is very sensitive to ring sizes. If you find your piece is too loose, add four additional A rings (shown in orange, above right) on the back of the piece, weaving each A ring through two D rings.
