5 questions with Spiros Papatheodorou

This stunning piece of metalwork sent to us by Spiros Papatheodorou, of Thessaloniki, Greece, was one of the winners of Facet's April Design Challenge, MYTH AND FOLKLORE. We loved browsing his Etsy store, found under his business name BizAReART ! He tells us this wonderful story about his piece:

Inspired by my homeland mythology, I crafted a charm of the adventures of a fictional character, the mythical king of Ithaca called Οδυσσέας, also known by the Latin name Ulysses!

The journey of Odysseus back to Ithaca has one more stop, so he and his crew landed on the island of Thrinacia. Zeus caused a storm which prevented them leaving. While Odysseus was away praying, his men ignored the warnings of Tiresias and Circe and hunted down the sacred cattle of the sun god Helios as their food had run short. The Sun God insisted that Zeus punish the men for this sacrilege!

Spiros didn't send us many photos of his work since he considers himself more of a "video guy." He is currently working to improve his "DiySilversmith" skills through video. "I want to share my work with the world and make jewellery crafting more interesting for people." Enjoy two of his videos below. His sawing skills are downright mesmerizing.

ARE YOU A PROFESSIONAL JEWELRY-MAKER, OR IS THIS A HOBBY?

I am a professional jeweler/metal artist. I have had a career for over ten years now in the jewelry sector, which is where my passion lies. Custom jewelry design is the heart of my business. Each piece of jewelry I make is a unique creation. Usually most are statement pieces and one-of-a-kind.

As jewelry artist, I get the opportunity to do what I love, to create unique and beautiful wearable pieces destined to become people's favorites!
HOW DID YOU LEARN JEWELRY-MAKING?

I completed four years of  studies at an apprenticeship school, Epas, but that was not enough for my artistic mind. I guess we are all self-taught in the jewelry business, based on our mistakes and projects that we have worked on. Unfortunately, 10 years ago when I started my career, there were no jewelry-making videos available on YouTube. So about two years ago, I decided to start my own channel about jewelry crafting, to merge ideas and craftsmanship methods!

WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE THAT YOU EVER GOT FROM A TEACHER OR A MENTOR?

Better to have a short life that is full of what I like doing than a long life spent in a miserable way.

And after all, if I do really like what I am doing it doesn't matter what it is I will eventually become a master of it!

Thank you, Mr. Alan!

WHERE DO YOU FIND INSPIRATION FOR YOUR WORK?

Usually, my inspiration comes from the real world (flowers lately), and everyday things I come across in my surroundings. Present and past experiences, my favorite artists, life, environment, childhood, school, work, movies!

I like to combine arts & make transitions to metal.

All artists have influences you know, whether we want to admit it or not... Of course, some things may influence our art more than others.
