Anne Mitchell Three Dimensional Forged Cuff
Three-Dimensional Forged Cuff

In this class, metalsmith Anne Mitchell will teach a variety of techniques for texturing fine-silver sheet and round wire. Students will dive into tube and flat rivets, liver of sulfur patina, hardening the piece, and metal shaping.

Using 18-gauge fine-silver sheet, you will also delve into a variety of texturing and scuffing techniques to personalize the base of this creation. Then use a combination of a rolling mill and hammers to texture the accent arches for the 3-D look and feel. After shaping the base to fit, you will then use a combination of precisely cut tube and rivets to attach the accent arches. The finishing touches will be to tumble, patina, and polish to bring out the highlights and texture.

Donna Lewis Silver Cholla Pendant
Silver Cholla Pendant

Donna Lewis will help her students learn how to cut down and form from natural elements; how to build a two-part mold for a three-dimensional impression; the best way to prepare a piece for the self-contained bail; patina and polishing techniques; and the trick to insert chain permanently into the piece.

If you take this class, you'll take a piece of cholla cactus skeleton and whittle it down to the piece you want. You'll make a two-piece mold so you can create both the front and back of your piece. You'll use PMC and your mold to create the piece as you see it. You will create the self-contained bail within the piece, then fire, patina, and polish. You will have a little portion of the desert southwest to wear close to your heart.
