Stylish cord necklaces

These necklaces are casually elegant and as easy to make as they are to wear. Start with some large-hole beads and components in warm, earthy colors, add some cord, and wrap things up with simple knotting or a flourish of wirework.

Supplies

Ceramic-pendant necklace 24 in. (61 cm)

  • 34 mm ceramic pendant     
  • 15 mm circle bead, double drilled
  • 20 8 mm tagua chips
  • leather cord 
  • scissors

Tagua nut necklace 20 in. (51 cm)

  • 34 mm tagua nut bead       
  • 2 8–10 mm carved round beads
  • 2 10 mm large-hole potato pearls
  • 6 9 mm decorative jump rings
  • 4 7 mm bead caps
  • 6 7 mm spacers
  • 4 6 mm spacers
  • waxed linen cord 
  • 12 in. (30 cm) 24-gauge wire
  • hook-and-eye clasp
  • chainnose or flatnose pliers
  • roundnose pliers
  • diagonal wire cutters
  • crayon or wax pencil
  • scissors

Ceramic necklace: 1. Cut a 30–32-in. (76–81 cm) piece of cord. Fold the cord in half and string a pendant over the loop.

2. Bring the ends of the cord through the loop and tighten the cord.

3. Bend each end of the wire near the wraps to create a partial loop.

4. Use roundnose and chainnose (or flatnose) pliers to make a small coil. Trim the excess wire. Repeat with the other end of the wire.

5. Flatten each coil against the wraps. Make another coiled wrap on the other side of the beads.

6. On each side, about 1 1⁄2–2 in. (3.8–5 cm) from the end of the cord, string half of a clasp. Fold the cord and check the fit, adjusting the fold as needed. Secure with a coiled wrap as in steps 2 through 5. About 3⁄4 in. (1.9 cm) from the coiled wrap, tie an overhand knot. String a 6 mm spacer and tie an overhand knot. Trim the excess cord.

3. On each side, about 3⁄4 in. (1.9 cm) from the loop, tie one or two overhand knots. String nine chips and tie one or two overhand knots.

4. String each end through a double-drilled circle bead and string a chip. Check the fit and tie one or two overhand knots on each end. Trim the excess cord.

Tip!
Be sure to tie your knots as close to the beads as possible for a professional look.

Tagua nut necklace: 1. Cut a 20–22-in. (51-56 cm) piece of cord. Center a tagua nut bead. On each side, string: 7 mm spacer, 9 mm jump ring, 7 mm bead cap, carved bead, bead cap, jump ring, 7 mm spacer, pearl, 7 mm spacer, jump ring, 6 mm spacer.

2. With a crayon or wax pencil, mark the cord on each side next to the beaded section. Cut a 3-in. (7.6 cm) piece of wire. Center the wire over one of the marks, and wrap the ends around the cord three times.
